im going to look at a 96 se 4 door with 180,000km on it for 700 bucks tonight after work...its an auto...so i think it'll be a 3 speed? what are some trouble spots of these cars? ive been told to just make sure that the coil packs are good. anything else to look out for? the guy says he doesnt think it needs anything for cert...but selling as is....well, thanks for your time.

The old 2.2's had head gasket issues. I'd look for the milkshake. If it has been repaired, it's likey that it has a better gasket now. The 3 speed tranny is relatively bulletproof.

Rust in either the front jacking point of the car of the front of the rear quarter would be a deciding factor for me. The rockers rust pretty bad too, but can be reaplaced relatively easily.

Most things are easy and cheap to fix.

i went to take a look at it while i was on lunch, theres only a little surface rust, everything else seams mint...theres a dent in the front, looks like it may have been into a slight fender bender...theres a crease going across part of the hood and the fender, then the fender is pushed out a little....other than that it looks good....it runs a little off though. might be the coil pack? apparently the horn keeps dieing...it went out again. they think it might be a fuse...im pretty sure im gonna buy it then look into that issue... has a new used alternator and a new battery. they claim that the wires/plugs were changed in the summer, but the wires look kinda old and @!#$ty...not too sure about that. didnt check the plugs...its due for an oil change which i think ill throw some synthetic in and a wix filter. only thing i havent checked is the headgasket...cause i dont know how to check that....

Milkshake referes to what the oil looks like when it mixes with coolant from the bad headagasket. You can sometimes see a buildup of the milkshake on the underside of oil caps. MAny forget to whipe that off wen selling a car with a pooched engine. The head can look cleaner and newer because the head likely went to the machine shop to be resurfaced and cleaned up. Othewise, yo generally hope the previous owner knows.

If a car has been hit in the fender, enough to damage the hood, it was hit pretty hard. I guess if the car drives straight, it'll be ok.

With it runnning rough, I would wonder. A compression test and leakdown test might be in order or at least worth the money to have checked out on a lift. A second opinion is always wise. Even if you know it all.

Synthetic on a 180k car. No need to waste money.

700 bucks isn't much for a running car. talk him down a few bills.

i've allready talked him down from 800, and someone else offered 700, i said ill give you that tonight, so he said ok. lol. its just a slight dent...in a line....i dont think it was actually in an accident. heres a pic i took with my camera phone....

you can hardly even tell...maybe someone just dropped something into it...i'll take a quick look for the oil coolant when i go get it tonight...im bringing it into a shop that my buddy works at tomorrow to go check it out...see what he says and what it needs for cert. if its no good i'll bring it back to the guy tomorrow....

holy crap thats alot of kms did it atleast come with a valid etest or anything???

i only paid 750 for my 2000 sunfire gt with a blown engine and its body only has 174,000.

2.2s are typically bulletproof though. nice to see it has proper snows on the front also

Re: looking at a 96se4door, trouble spots?

yeah, its got some nice tires in the front...the engine wasnt rebuilt after looking at it some more....but it still has lots of power. tranny shifts good, good shocks, basically...everything is good....only things i had to do was put some lucas power stearing stop leak in cause it had a bad power stearing leak. the flex pipe before the cat has a hole in it, so im going to replace it with a peice of streight pipe tomorrow...the horn didnt work, so i wired up a switch to it just for safety, then i'll figure out later whats going on with it. now...on to the 97 pod light problem... when i hit bumps my pod light turns on, and wont turn off. i pull the fuse for 20 minutes, put it back in, then it turns on and off again. hit another bump, happens again....how do you fix this?

The engine mounts are likely original allowing the engine to rock around. You are going to need that flex in the exhaust. The lower mount is really cheap. The upper is a rubber incert.

Tracing electrical can be a bitch. Most electrical issues I have envcountered turned out to be the fixture at the end of the line. Good luck with that one.

all of the underneath is mint, theres a little hole in the subframe though...gonna have to get that patched...maybe it'll be covered in snow or they'll miss it when i bring it in for cert tomorrow, lol

bingo.

car needs that, some brake lines, left front strut barring, gas neck, e-brake equalizer, and rear shoes...
shop cost for this : just under 500 bucks
total cost if i do it myself : just under 100 bucks...

lol....the shop cost is with deals too, and not counting the brake shoes or the gas neck.
