RBC won't cover the car until it is in Canada.
That is 2000mi's without insurance... which I am sure is both illegal and
dangerous throughout the states.
Does anybody, specifically anybody who has imported a car before, know how to deal with this insurance situation? Did you insure your vehicle and what company did you go through? Are 1wk-1month policies available for this purpose specifically?

Why does the insurance company have to know where the car is?
How do they know it's not here already?
The car is in the united states.
They don't insure cars in the united states.
The car needs to be driven from the US into Canada, registered, and only then will RBC insure it.
More so, proof of insurance is a prerequisite in having the car imported across the border. I have to supply proof of insurance to the guards (as well as a myrid of other forms).
On top of all that, I want insurance on the vehicle if it is going to be driven through the US. A lot can happen over 2000mi's.
So then, when I call RBC and ask them to add a vehicle unto my policy, they will ask me for information about the vehicle, including ownership, which I will only be able to provide them if the vehicle is registered in Canada. The vehicle is not registered in Canada. Thus, my problem.

I see alot of ppl bringing cars across, and 98% of the time they are on flatbeds. Can you get insurance in the US temporarily?

Why not register it and then get insurance, and a 10 day trip permit and drive it up here?

Anyways, I called up RBC today and was on the phone for quite a bit.
In order to put a new car on my policy I need...
- Make/Model
- VIN
- Safety (possibly)
This makes sense, as I can now *
possibly put the car on my policy and go pick it up. Where I got confused is what comes first, Insurance > registration, or Registration > insurance.
I'm going to drop by a registration office tomorrow and inquire about a permit.

registration requires proof of insurance
acquiring insurance is not dependant on the car being registered
your company sounds like they are being anal about the whole process....they should be able to provide the insurance with the VIN number and vehicle info only and give you a temp insurance card for it (the card is valid throughout north america so it they shouldnt have an issue doing that)
then you can take that and get it registered and all that jazz
