Bad new guys
Tuesday, February 21, 2006 9:46 AM
Well guys after all that work something went wrong. I went to fire it up at about 4 o clock this morning and as soon as it started to fire up it let out a big bang. nothing externally appears to be broken but I think it jumped timing and bent some valves.

This took 2 good long days with 2 sometimes 4 people working on it so I need help bad guys. If anyone can offer up some time so I can get this thing back apart I would REALLY appriciate it.

Thanks to Corey, Ryan, Vincent, and Dave for the help with teardown and reassembly the first time. Hopefully you guys can can back and help again

we put a patriot stage 2 head on my car.

so far from what i can tell the tensioner never got tight and the timing jumped. the motor is definately frozen in place. meaning...bent valves at best

well heres some good and bad news...

bad first...
1) i have no time or space to do this repair myself again. parents wnat my car out of the garage like last week
2) its gonna cost about $950 for a shop i trust to do it
3) i have no other car right now

good news...
1) brian (speedracerz) offered to do all the work for me for free.
2) i can afford to get the car to him
3) Patriot agreed to fix the head for free or really cheap depending

Only downside to having Brian do the work is that it would be a few weeks before he could get to my car because he has other projects going right now.

I know I've been making a lot of requests lately but I have to make another one. If someone has a beater I can rent frm them for UBER cheap until my car is done I would be forever in your debt. If anyone has a car sitting around doing nothing that is reliable enough for me to commute to and from work and school (100 miles a week or so, maybe a little more) and possibly get me out to see my g/f (about 60miles each way once a week or every other weekend) PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP!!

really i just need it for the school and work...it would suck to not see my g/f for a month or so but if thats the cost then ill have to deal with it and find a way around it.

Thanks for any help guys.

if theres a warm place to do it I could get it all ripped back apart... maybe talk my work letting me do it there... you'd get charged and you'd have to get it towed in but its an idea... what actually went wrong during the install? sorry I was only aorund for taking it apart and not there for reassembly

ryan: i think it was the tensioner. i dont think it ever popped back out after we compressed it to get it back in. if you can get me a price I'd love to have someone I know work on the car

I'll talk to them tommarow about it, see what they say, and tensior doesn't really compress in, its spring loaded so it shoudl it shoudl always be pushign out as long as all the pieves are there. But I'll tlak to my boss tommarow and see what they say

the directions have you press it in to compress it and then strike it once its in to release it. i never pushed it in far enough to seat it though so i really dont know whats up. really all i want now is the factory head back on so the car runs and i can get around. i feel like an inmate right now. my whole life is now dictated by the wardens i live with (you guys met them). Once its running again I'll get the head back to Patriot and have them fix it for whenever I can afford to get the head done again

Pics for Ryne and info for anyone that cares

Well I spent about an hour and a half last night workng on his car, I got the turbo off, timing cover, off, ignition and valve cover off, cams out, intatke manifold off, injector and fuel rail out, ect... the only thing left is the upper motor mount and then just unbolting the actual head and its off.....

my findings....

engine didn't crank by hand, it was locked up, I pulled the cams out so the valves would close and I could make sure the crank itself and bottom end still turn over ect.. heres what i found....

Exhaust cam gear..... normal

intake cam gear.... the teeth that positiong the gear to the cam got sheered off the gear.

When engine was turned by hand it was fine, when engine cranked over the entire engine moved except the intake cam

with the cams out all the voves shoudl be closed.... like this....

but the #2 cylinders intake vlaves look like this....

and its very hard to see in the pic but a cam cap was installed backwards (which is not a huge deal, its not nessesarily bad for it, but its not helping anything) and one of the intake cam journals got scored up slightly

and this is how it sits now untill monday when I actually remove the head

All I had on me was my camera phone, so sorry about the crappy pics, maybe I'll bring my camera into work on monday and get some decent pics

no i owe him $500 and never ending discounts...especially for dealing with his boss for me and trying to buy the car more time there until i can get out to Hahn and get the new cam gear and get 2 new valves to put in from patriot

Let me take this chance to give both companes, Hahn and Patriot, a HUGE plug. I called both companies at 8AM the day the problems started. Within 20 minutes I had commitments from both to help get the car back to where it needed to be. Patriot offered up new vlaves to me and any machining work that needed to be done for free and Bill is helping out with parts I might need from his stash. Thanks to both companies the car will probably be running even better than before in less than a week.

AND a HUGE shout out to Darkstars for stepping up and fixing this for me. Without him the car would be at a local shop and I'd be paying someone I don't trust.

Ryan...I got a new cam cap for the motor. I have 10 extra now from the ones we took off. I'll bring that with when I bring you eveything else.

Ryne I have the head at home with me, if your gonna get it before running out to Hahn... and the other thign try to get my $ ASAP, boss man is not to happy the car is gonna be stuck here for a week and he wants it paid ASAP because in the past we've had cars that were sitting outside waiting for work to be done and the owner has had it towed out at night to avoid paying.... not saying your gonna do that I knwo you wont but again boss isn't to happy right now hahahaha
