Hey guys, today a noise started coming from the passenger side of my motor. I imediatly took it to a shop, first place said it could be the tensioner pulley for the belt or the timing chain. second shop said definitely timing chain. now the noise isnt tooo terrible, but you can hear it for sure. now is this super bad? im goign to be rebuilding this car in a few months, i think its just a rattle in the timing chain and the guy at the second shop told me his neighbor has been driving his cavalier like this for a year. i feel like im taking a huge gamble driving it. i just dont know what to do, i cant rebuild it at this time.
idk... do you think it will be ok to drive for a few months? do you think its the timing chain or the tensioner pully? or is there another thing that makes noise on that side?
I originally had it posted in the maintenance section, but got no responses and i really need to know! PLEASE HELP!

The timing chain tensioner probably went, or is going (same case in my DD 02 Z)... I will rip it down this summer when I am driving the gto, but for now its usaly only on hot restarts, once the engine goes above 2K in the rpm it goes away.
Like a rattling right?

only get worse/louder
think it could be the belt tensioner?? im gunna take the belt off tomorrow and start the car f the noise is gone i guess ill know lol

In that thread the guy tracked down his noise which sounds ALOT like my noise to be his water pump. is it possible mine is this same problem? even though our water pump is ran off the timing chain...

ok, so ive decided im going to just take a weekend and replace the timing chain, water pump, and all the gaskets and seals i can while doing it. but i need some help as i cant quite figure out what parts i need... on o'rieleys web site they have a timing set and a timing chain kit.. not sure which one i need, i know i can get it cheaper at rock auto or w/e but if some one could help me out with some part numbers or give me links to the parts i should get while doing this it would be VERY appreciated... Help a noob out!
(my dads going to be doing the work with my assistance and he knows what hes doing, i just need to order the correct parts)

im going to upload a video tonight, im just soo damn nervous about it idk what to do... i really need some piece of mind lol, if its just the water pump bearing im pretty sure it will last till the end of the week, but idk anything about the timing chain.. i hope it lasts

Nice work. I would have honestly not have guessed it being that. I can say it did not sound like any rod knock I have heard or timing chain tensioner failure I had heard.

hey BTW, what front bumper is that? i just got an 01 and im going to be looking for a better bumper then the stock z24 bumper cause they are LAME on those years lol on a stock suspension how low do you think that bumper would go?
