Bad water pump? wierd overheating issue....

Hi All,

I am having this wierd overheating issue... it started today, i started my car, and the low coolant light came on and i shruggedit off thinking i could get some after work, i get about 8-10 miles down the road and my temp gauge is just off the charts, so i IMMEDIATLY pull over, pop the hood and my engine isnt even that warm to the touch. so i go look in my car na di had a couple ounces of coolant left in the back of my car, so i put that in, HOING it would help the problem. it didnt. after that i was watching all the way to work and it seemed that the faster i would go, not rpms, but speed the higher the gauge went, so i was thinking it might be a faulty temp gauge. but when i got to work i could see steam coming from under my hood, so i know thats not good. I live in MN so its pretty cold here, does that make coolant disapear faster? im going to go and buy a thing of coolant after work here, thank god the orielys is only like 2 blocks away. im just wondering if this is somthing more serious than just i dont have coolant in my car?

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks,
Anton Miller

so i added coolant and very minimal leaked out, there was a good sized puddle infront of my car earlier this morning, then i added coolant, and parked in a different spot and there were 2 very small spot of coolant, still leaking coolant, but im not sure why it has reduced.. a coworker here has told me that the coolant could have possibly boiled up and over flowed, but im not sure if that is correct...

im going to take it in and have some one look at it in a little bit...

again, any help is appreciated.

sounds like what happens when the resevoir cap goes bad. the cap on the res holds the pressure in the system, when it goes bad the coolant level will raise as the temp goes up (or after you shut the car off), and it will eventually overflow and pour out of the cap (like your friend said) it usually makes a puddle near the pass front wheel and you usually see coolant all over the frame under the bottle. its cheap and easy to replace, i would start with that and go from there.

I had a similar problem. I found that my fan stopped working, which caused my radiator's plastic end tank to crack. It only leaked when the temp went above normal. I replaced the fan motor and radiator. I also did a complete flush and thermostat replacement. No problems since. Hope you find what went wrong. Good luck.
