TTR Mounts Strange Noise ( Not Vibration )
Friday, January 21, 2011 9:41 PM
Just finished installing the upper, lower and automatic transmission mounts on my 2003 Chevy Cavalier and there seems to be a clacking noise on the right side of the engine bay ( Near tranny but seems to be higher than it ). I followed the directions and also my alldatapro print outs to a tee and everything was torqued and installed to specification. Is this normal to have a sort of clacking noise? And also is it normal for the whole engine to seemed louder? Non of these seemed to be related to the vibrations as it has its own distinct hum.

i had a similar noise. found it was coming from my upper mount (also a TTR)

the rubber had wore out and the 2 parts of the mount were rubbing on eachother. was a super annoying noise. i took the mount out and took it apart, rotated the rubber 90degrees and it fixed the issuse. a week later i bought an RK sport upper mount. never looked back lol

for some reason TTR's polyurethane just breaks down quickly... be it a design flaw or a bad batch of poly, i dont know but their mounts have been had persistent problems over the years here.

If it takes forever.... I will die trying. Underdog Racing

Best guess is that you are hearing some of the engine vibs through the car. When you are driving the car do you hear any of it (when you are actually moving)

Aftermarket exhausf downpipe? Make sure it is not hitting the tunnel.

nope bought it used. i did however buy trans mounts from u guys directly a few years back. not complaining about the quality of the mount, served it purpose for many years, the rubber just wore out. it seems the outer lip of the rubber isnt enough to hold the pressure from the plate that bolts to the motor from laterial movement. after moving the rubber 90degrees it seemed to have solved the issue.

I think I have have found the issue, the upper mount rubber seems to have almost pulled completely out of the hole, as there is just a sliver left visible on the engine side and it is almost metal on metal, I think this happened during the installation of the transimmion mount as we had to move the engine quite a bit. Would I be able to remove the mount and use my press to push the rubber back in? WIll it be safe like this as I work pretty steady for the next two days and won't have much time to fix it.

Hope it will be fine to drive about 10 mins each way to work tonight. After work I will do a visual inspection of all mounts and repair them accordingly.

it will be fine to drive, your engine isn't going to just fall out, it's just now the poly basically isn't doing it's job and ur virtually riding with a completely solid metal mount.

Thanks for everyones opinions. Didn't get a change to fix the mounts tonight but got to drive it a little more. The clacking noise seems to have stopped, will report back when I get things fixed.

Got a chance to mess with them, not good. The only one that looks fine is the transmission.

Lets start with the upper mount: The mount has a large ridge on the back to keep it from pulling out but virtually no padding to keep the rubber from pushing in as clearly visible in the picture.

The lower mount is good except for the front rubber, it seems to be to big as the front area is smaller and there was a rather large gap between rubber and metal unlike the flush rear. This caused it to not fit in the front and get all smashed out when tightened as seen below.

Could you guys please compare mine to yours? Any tips or ideas? I pushed the upper mount back down but it pushed right back out when I installed it.

^ this, and I say this every time someone brings up the TTR mounts, but I have the TTR upper and tranny mounts and to this day (been rocking them for a few years now) no problems with them, especially not this, *knocks on wood.

Yea I have no idea what was up. I should have contacted them when I noticed the rubber on the lower looked to bit for the mount and that the upper only seemed to have stops on one end ( or is this normal? ). I have tried multiple times to fix the upper mount but it just pushes out again..

Other than the terrible powder coating job I haven't had any issues. Granted I don't have many miles on the mounts they have been mounted for years. It almost looks like to me that upper mount can't be tightened down all the way on the motor side. I just don't see how you would have it cocked and that angle like that.

No idea, the motor seems to push the front of the mount in towards the rubber more than it does the rear causing it to be odly angled

You may have something else causing misalignment of the mounts. Has the car ever been in an accident?

The car has never had any damage from accidents, the mounts were rather hard to get aligned and it seems each time we reinstall them they are even harder to align.

Re: TTR Mounts Strange Noise ( Not Vibration )

Hmm. Seems something is happening, and perhaps also getting worse over time. Are the remaining (non-TTR) mounts in good condition? When you install (including the initial install), do you loosen other mounts and re-align the entire driveline accordingly?

Not to state the obvious, and please don't feel like I am scolding you...but it really does not matter how well-designed a product is, if you have to force it into place, it's going to be jeopardized form the get-go. Aftermarket mounts, since they are more rigid than stock, can require some extra care to get everything working together well.

You did support the motor when you installed the upper mount right?

mine ended up the same way and actually put a divot into the mount itself. RK sport is probably the best bet overall for us.

If mine goes bad I will probably just make a solid one.
