Hey evryone. I have a 00 base with the ohv. I was wondering what is the most effective upgrades i can do to get the most hp out of it. 2 things, no turbo and no swaps. My dad and i are having a little contest. He's building a 72 442 as a track car n im workin on the cav. This summer where goin down to atco n we're going to race. It also has to be street legal because its my DD. Thanks.
At the moment i have about 700 buck thanks to the holidays and im expecting a pay check of over 100 n i make around 90 on an average week every week
My dad says he only wants about 400 horses in his car. I kinow I deff hav the wieght ratio on my side lol. Just need more power.
ur never going to catch ur dad. it won't happen, especially since ur counting out basically the most effective way to make power out of that particular engine. turbo.
if you want best bang for your buck buy a nitrous kit.
Based on all the "rules" or the criteria, I would say you should invest in some "hopes and dreams" ......
P&P Tuning
420.5whp / 359.8wtq
alright, after chatting with my dad, the turbo is a go. I have around 800 after this friday. Is there a turbo that cost under that and still have enough to get it installed. N also i need a tune. Anywhere in PA that can do all of this?
Uhmmmmm 800 might pay for a tune buuuuut since your asking on how or what kits are available im going to guess you dont have the knowledge or know how to put together a junkyard kit. might get lucky and somebody will have a cheap second hand kit available
Whats up people?
a turbo for 800? lmao
if your dad knows anything about cars then should automatically know that no good turbo kit is going to be 800 or less. then you got the internals of the engine, tranny, axles, suspension, tires for racing, then the fuel system for the turbo, then a tune. face it kid, you are in over head about this. save up and get a real car
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
With only $800 I would go with just a 150 shot of nitrous and only use it once when you go to race him and pry to god that your engine lasts the trip down the drag strip. If you're really really lucky you wont blow the hell out of your engine, but theres no way in hell it would work twice. And with the 442 making 400 wheel you'll probably still lose even with the 150 shot. You need to be shooting for about 300 wheel to have a chance at beating him and even with that you're going to need to know how to drive. You're also going to need slicks to get the power down.

I get the felling your dad is very old-school, and has yet to learn about turbo-charging. It's okay... A friend of mine was that way too & he's since learned first-hand.
No insult meant & all-that aside: IIRC, the '72 442 came stock with a 455ci (7.4L) V-8 that... even with the lowered compression, which I doubt it'll have anymore after your dad is done... easily displaces way-more air than your LN2! And how much air (Or oxygen, actually) you can displace at any given RPM greatly effects how much power you will produce. Not to mention how it's displaced over twice as many cylinders as you're working with, which has an effect as well. A bolt-on turbo alone won't be enough help, as your dad's Cutlass stock likely produces more torque at-idle that a stock LN2 does at it's peak. That alone crushes your chances. Then there's the whole weight-transfer thing... Don't get me started on it, but there's a reason why the Pro-classes of all racing & the hottest performance cars in the world don't run FWD.
Sorry kid, but the only chance you have at beating your dad realistically is in an economy-run! Better you focus on doing that with you DD LN2 Cavy, and save-up the money you save on fuel for something meant to "immortal" in status after a build... Not playing parts-swapper in hopes of going all F'n'F with some chipmunk-killer.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
I vote 200 shot of nitrous ...
But have a spare motor ready for after the race.
