2.4 to 2.3 Conversion question
Thursday, November 11, 2010 9:39 PM
What 2.3 HO works in a 97 z24, does this motor bolt up to the izuzu 5 speed that is already in these cars?

any quad 4 can work, and yes they will all bolt up to the isusu. the LD9 and quad 4's share the exact same bellhousing bolt pattern.

you'll just need to find a 95 quad 4 alternator as it is the only one that will plug into ur harness AND bolt up to the block properly. other than that and some coolant line modifications here and there its a drop in affair.

You will have to get rid of the EGR codes in the PCM if you dont want an annoying light, same with the CPS codes. Power steering is different, and may be the hardest part of the swap to make work correct.

Tuning will be a must since it will run dangerously lean uptop if you don't.

clyde- you CAN use the quad style power steering but you gotta angle it down some to clear the hood. the 95 purple people eater we bought from chris was like this.

all 95-99s had isusu's, in 00-02 they all had the getrag F23, LN2, LD9, and L61.

Thanks guys, has anyone done this swap? And is it worth it.

I definitely did my homework on this swap although I opted to build a 2.4. If you port and polish the head and give it aa good tune you will probably be equivalent power wise to a stock 2.4 with GMPP supercharger kit(stock pulley size) I say its worth it.

I will have to remember that. I would prefer to keep PS in my car. I already know its going to be a pain to get it all mounted as the pump mounting brackets dont exactly bolt up to a newer Getrag like they do on the older ones.

or you could just mod an intake tower and cam and use the LD9 style...

why not just get the better transmission with the HOquad? better gear ratios, stronger tranny, and the PS will actually mount up properly........

The better transmission is almost impossible to find around where i live, based on what my buddy and I came up with his Calais has the same ratios as my 02, and I dont feel like making custom mounts for a trans. If I had an Isuzu trans to start then it would be less of a pain in the ass, however I have the craptastic Getrag in my car.

I'm currently working on doing the same thing. I lucked out and found a 2.3HO with tranny from a 93 Beretta GTZ for 500. The parts guy at work did a search on some website(forgot exactly which one) and found a junk yard about an hour away with a core available. I was told the motor was good and running but the owner let it sit for a year before junking it. The junkyard couldnt get it started so they called it a core and gave me a deal. In the process of cleaning and machining the whole thing and building the stroker while i'm at it.

Do you mean the ECU? If so, i've been working on that as well. Been digging through schematics on and off for a month now and it doesn't look like it will be much of an issue on paper. Once I get both engines side by side i'll have a better idea of how everything will play out but so far it doesn't look too difficult. If you have basic wiring skills and can read schematics anything is possible.

the 2.3 power steering does not have to be modded to clear the hood. I have a w41 swap in my sunfire, just needed minor mods to coolant bypass, engine mount, t stat pipe and the low pressure p/s return line.

If I remember correctly you need a 89 quad coolant / thermostat housing to make plumbing easier.

yes use the aluminum water neck from the quad, the bypass tube will be out of the head now instead of the water neck due to the thermostat being in the head now.

as far as the 'burp' line is concerned... couldnt we just put a bleeder screw in the head fitting and manual burp the system so we can do away with that stupid line?

no its the steam line that pressurizes the surge tank and forces more coolant into teh system.

Re: 2.4 to 2.3 Conversion question

really? cus i simply deleted line. pluged the hole in the outlet and used a coolant tank with only nipple for the overflow to radiator. considering thats how it is on the quad car i didnt think i would have a problem...and i dont
