1999 Sunfire LN2 random bog issues - plz help
Thursday, September 23, 2010 8:46 PM
Hey everyone, and thank you for your time in advance!

Today my car decided to start doing this random thing where all the sudden ill loose all power for a split second (motor power - not electrical power) So ill be driving along just fine and all of a sudden it will like sort of bog or just cut power for a split second and its noticeable because the nose of the car will drop if it happens when im accelerating.

-No engine codes-
1999 2200 sfi OHV engine in a sunfire SE
mods: CAI, resonator box delete, Header and full exhaust, Performance tuned, AC delete, ac delco platinum plugs.

Also I should mention sometimes my car doesn't wanna start right away, once in a blue moon. But it always starts within under 3 seconds of cranking.

also, i think my injectors are sorta noisy, but maybe thats just me. I dont know aha

Thanks again!

The noise is likely in the valve train. It's almost unavoidable unless you upgrade the components within. My brother's 99 2200 took awhile to start cold due to a leaky injector so that may be your issue there.

As for the loss of power...
Is it only when under a load? How frequent is it? My best guess is a fuel filter. Although, I personally started a thread on an issue similar to this a long time ago and it was traced back to the throttle positioning sensor; even though it never threw a code.

I dont think it could be the fuel filter considering it runs like new at idol and when the bog happens it doesn't chugg or anything it just stops making power for like 1 second or half a second. like a quick cut out.

Thanks for the suggestions! maybe the tps is failing?

I'm telling you man, this was a sensor issue for a few of us.

I found out my fuel pump was going out on mine. Hopefully it's not as bad on yours.

I had a very similar problem and my current modlist (since I blew my otter motor) is the same as yours, differences in the tune no doubt.

Mine was a bad TPS sensor. No code for it though. The way I found out was, hooked up a scan gauge to the obd Port and stepped on the pedal and the readings were all over the map, new sensor (actually junkyard pull) and the problem fixed.

I paid $2 for admission to the yard and $5 for the sensor, worth trying IMO.

I will try that out tomorrow at work (work at a garage) the tps test.

Pretty freeking sure it's my fuel pump though, or a combination of the two.

I'm going to try the TPS for me, it won't hurt. It will save me a whole lot of money if it is.

At 113k-mi, my '99 Sonoma had a reoccurring TPS code hiccup... Never-again after it was replaced.

Okay, problem is a lot worse now.

Fuel pump only comes on 50% of the time.
Even if the fuel pump does come on it doesnt always start and it wont stay running if i try to drive. (it will idol all day long no problem)

Im getting a code finally, p0200 injector control circuit.

Checked the fuel pump today at work (I work at a shop) and everything seemed to be checking out.

New ideas?

Ps, the TPS is good.

Youd never guess what the problem was...
-Just worn down platinum plugs, and a bad connection at the main relay box (corroded- cleaned it and fixed fuel pump issues.)
Got a new set of platinum plugs in there and everything's back to normal (no more random loss of power, jerking or bumping along.)
