HO valve springs on stock ld9 lifters?
Wednesday, September 01, 2010 9:11 AM
is it possible to run the 2.3 HO springs/retainers on a stock ld9 with the smaller ld9 lifters? Or will the lifters not fit on the bigger springs correctly? Does anyone recommend replacing 100,000 mile old stock ld9 valve springs? (i have secret cams)
The build is looking like, eagle rods, wiseco 9/1, all clevite 77 bearings, jbp oil pump, arp head/main studs, SS standard sized valves, lsj 42lb injectors, pacesetter header, i got a ported/polished mp45 ready to go on when its done but i really wanna twincharge it eventually so thats why the lower comp, What im lookin for is suggestions on valve springs and anything you guys dont like lemme hear it
(i dont think i need anything crazy for just secret cams, maybe nothing but new ld9 springs) Thanks for all your help

Just get the Melling High flow oil pump. That is what the JBP pump is...............and you may actually get your parts, unlike if you order from JBP.

The spring combo has been done, and run by a few members, but I would recommend all LG0 "HO" valve train, or all LD9 vavle train

Twincharge is a complete waste of money in my honest opinion. Sell off the charger and do a turbo build....

alright, i got the melling pump, all things considered on the twincharge lets just say i'm planning to have more boost than than a mp45 in the future. That being said, would it be a good idea to do anything with the valve springs. (they are original ld9 valve springs w/ about 109,000 miles on them) also i do not plan on going much past the stock redline with the balance shaft/ oil pump cluster in the oil pan

I have been running the 33mm LD9 lifters for over 3 years with HO springs with no problems. That being said, I don't recommend it, as there is very little clearance between spring and lifter. Also, if you have no future plans of going much past stock redline, then HO springs are a waste. You really won't have a need for that stiff of a spring when you won't be anywhere close to floating valves.

I also ran the small lifters with the 2.3 springs, after a tear down somewhere between 10 and 20k later they showed no abnormal signs of ware. That being said others have said they found ware on the lifters after running this combo.

i remeber reading on a post where someone was using HO springs with HO cams and 33mm lifters and the lifters were hitting the springs. thats why i went with getting a 2.4 intake tower bored for 35mm lifters.

everybody knows where i stand on this. no sense beating a dead horse to death here

ill just go out by saying use all the damn LG0 high output parts and live a long and happy life. that is all.

So the stock springs will be reliable for what i plan on doing? Would it be a waste of money to buy new stock springs just to be safe?

if there is nothing wrong with your springs don't replace them. i have 170k on my stock springs and lifters. i put secret cams in about 6k miles ago. everything is fine.
.375 lift cams are the biggest you will be able to use with stock LD9 lifters and springs.

nope...but if memory serves me right, someone (maybe Skilz?) used them with HO cams with no issues revving around 7k.
