97 2.4L egr delete hypothesis
Thursday, July 08, 2010 6:20 PM
Ok so I am in the process of putting a 99 2.4L into my 97 Z24and I'm sort of curious about deleting the EGR while making the computer and state inspection happy. The cavalier has egr while the 99 does not but I know the port is there in the 99 and to use the 97 manifolds etc. We only have visual and gas cap emissions here, no exhaust sniffer. Now if I use the 99 exhaust manifold gasket in my 97 to block the port but also leave the egr hooked up on the intake side would it throw my CEL? As far as I know the egr is simply a valve, it doesn't measure flow or anything. I'm also wondering if it would clog up my cat and throw a code for that. Anyone try this out?

i believe it will throw a cel because of the sensor

Whats up people?

It might throw a low flow code, the egr valve itself cannot measure flow, but the ECM can.

You might be able to fool the ECM's low flow code by drilling a tiny hole in the throttle plate and slowly increasing in size until the code goes away. Just give enough flow past the IAC to match the flow the EGR would normally see. If the ECM really does 'measure flow' it will simply be a vacuum vs. IAC position target. That's about the only way I think the ECM could measure flow, unless I'm overlooking something.

Or just change the computer to a 99.

The EGR code doesnt really do anything. My friends GP has been running with one since we switched it back to stock. Just have to put up with the light.
