i have a 2.2 ecotec in my 2003 sunfire, i am looking to get another motor so i can build it then swap it into my car but i know the reluctor wheels are different on a few. i beleive it is the saturn ion, and the cobalt that are not compatible. if anyone knew exactly i would really appreciate the help

you already have one of the better engines without having to go crazy with custom building. there are a few guys with 3800s, try that one out of a grand prix GTP

Im not an expert on eco builds, but I do believe the biggest issue with the major engine parts was the 2.4L reluctor wheel, meaning you couldnt swap a 2.4 crank into a 2.2. I think all the 2.2 eco parts are interchangeable. However I wouldnt take that as gospel.

I thought the 2.2s that came in the cobalts and ions also have a different reluctor wheel or after 05 they did or somthing like that.

2002-2005 L61 are generally the same. Delta bodies are not a direct drop in because of a couple factors such as the intake cam lacking the power steering drive hex. I belive the N-bodies are a direct swap.

FWIW, most local yards have Jbody ecotecs a-plenty. No need to make life difficult unless you get it for a steal

I wouldn't touch a 2006+ L61 because of the crank trigger wheel being different as mentioned. The guts are the same, but you would have to swap the older crank.

Since it came from another Cavalier you should be good to go.

The older style Malibu's (the body style GM never changed in 100 years ) that had the Ecotec, all of the last-gen Grand-Am's/Alero, all of the Saturn L-series cars, any 2002+ Ecotec J-body, will be a direct swap into your car. The only difference will be in placement of the peripherals and fuel system, but those will swap over from your other engine. Anything "newer" such as the Cobalts, new body style Malibu, G6, ect, will not work with our cars. As others have said, the crankshaft reluctor wheel is different on these and the engine won't run. It should be said, however, that you CAN take an 05-07 L61 Ecotec engine bottom end, use the crankshaft from your old engine, and drop it in and it'll work just fine. Supposedly the 2005 and up L61 engine is improved for durability. All I know is the engine in my Sunfire is from a 2007 Cobalt LT, with a 2005 J-body cylinder head and crankshaft, 2.4 SS intake manifold, and a 2.0 SS LSJ head gasket. A good basic rule of thumb is, if the engine came with an electric motor actuated throttle assembly, the crankshaft is different. If it came with a cable actuated throttle assembly, the crankshaft is the same as yours.

Also, the cylinder heads from the 2007 and up with individual coil packs are different. The early "newer" Ecotec L61 engines that still have the single coil pack assembly are similar enough that they can be used, but you must use cams designed for the "older" L61 engines if you want to keep power steering.

Keep in mind that the 2003 and earlier Ecotec engines have a "triangle" cast onto the transmission end of the cylinder head. This was simply a provision for EGR, which I've never actually seen used. This won't affect anything though, unless you have clearance issues with something you added to your engine. Also, the oil pan is pretty much J-body specific. Most of the others lack the cast in threaded bosses to bolt the lower dogbone mount bracket onto it.
