Best parts for building ld9 head

Ive been searching for a few hours and cant find a damn thing....

Here's the story....

Was cruising to a little car meet that goes on every Wed and Idk why but all of a sudden i start hearing this little chatter noise while i'm cruising down the highway, i get off the highway with my all my other buddies car. One of them tells me your motor sounds a little loud..... So i turned right went under a bridge and I started hearing it myself, we got to where we were going and sure enough i have a very loud lifter tick lol....

So enough with the Dr. Suess Story time. I decided I'm just going to build a head. Ive already got my Secret cams waiting to go in. But I want to know if there's better valves ( I thought about 1mm oversized SS valves from car customs.net ), retainers, lifter guides, lifters, and etc. I planned on taking it up and getting a port and polish and 3 angle valve job and have them machine the head to fit the oversized valves if i go the route. I plan on doing a bottom end build and a turbo set up as well this winter. IM still learning stuff about the ld9 motor its still new to me lol. Also if anybody has an extra head or parts I could use let me know thanks. Thanks to all future insight and help.....

sorry to tell ya bud but that noise is more than likely rod knock. its just a fact of life with an LD9 and a stock oil pump.

as for your head questions, your headed in the right direction. you can get the valves from car customs. im sure he can get you the guides to but if not, turbo tech racing has them.

depends on how far you wanna go with the build. titanium retainers can be had if you want them.

as for a head, you have a pm.

What kind of oil pumps are out there as an upgrade?

As for the head where can i pick up these titanium retainers i want to go full out with this head....... thanks for the info

you can go Mellings or the preferred 2.3 oil swap if your not scared of a bit of work

Which melling part number is it? is the 2.3 a better way to go even though it requires more work? whats needs to be modded on the oil pan to fit a 2.3 oil pump?

the block needs to be drilled out, and other passages plugged... head over to quad4forums.com and look it their write up section. you'll see a nice write up with pics...

you may also be able to search here for it as well.

i'd get a machine shop to do the work...

as for your head questions, i agree with Brad... however i'm still running stock guides without issue... as long as the valves aren't loose, you should be good.

here are my build specs

the retainers are found through a member on here... his name is clyde moore, aka "mitdr774" he can hook you up with them.

Alright but what about the rest of the parts for the head? Any other upgraded parts for it out there? I'm still looking but at the same time any input from people here is greatly appreciated

Brad: i think clyde only had two sets... and you and me are the ones who got em....

==================================

HO cams can be found all day long, and you can ask here how everyone does it with stock retainers...

Parts...
HO Springs - GM - $16 a spring ... Sealed Power - $4 a spring ... (you take your chances reving past 7200 RPM with the sealed power)
1mm SS valves - carcustoms.com
arp head studs - carcustoms.com
HO Lifters - Part stores or GM have these...

you'll need the HO Exhaust cam tower, and you'll need to modify the HO Intake Cam with the PS insert, and CPS pad, and get your housing modified to accept the bigger lifters and cam.

Is the melling oil pump better then stock? Or is it just a stock replacement?

Re: Best parts for building ld9 head

for the most part its just a stock replacement.... the best route is to do the 2.3 oil pump swap with a melling pump if you have the resources to do so

I thought someone took apart both pumps and the melling was quite a bit beefier inside.

possibly... but its not as good as the 2.3 pump
