Did a little intake mod

I would have kept it behind the plastic part of the bumper. If your driving through any rain that filter is gonna get soaked

Like to the right more? So it not as exposed to the holes?

Yah, when I was n/a I had mine sitting just beside the washer fluid tank on the drivers side. Its out of the bay and its well protected from any moisture getting onto the filter there

I see what you mean and i like the idea. Question though, i see that the flow comes in through the fog light hole, but once i install some fogs would it get in the way of direct air flow?

You dont really need air flowing directly onto the filter per say. Just having it out of the hot engine bay seems to be good enough. Plus outside air will be coming in through the cut out on the bumper anyway.

Ok thanks, i have always wondered how people put them in that place but never figured it out. The way my piping is it feeds down between engine and radiator by the battery, then under fender and U-turned to the intake. Is there an easier way to connect it in that corner spot?

I had a K&N tube from the intake box on the motor going around the battery and then down through a 2-3" hole beside the washer tank. Once I put the battery in the trunk it just went straight past where the battery was.

I no longer have my stock intake box, right now im using the plastic spectre tubing, cut a hole for the IAT sensor, and its connected directly to throttle body. Would it be better to put that box back on, and just connect the tubing to that?

Its not like its ram air .....
It will be fine with the fog light there in the future.
our engines do not displace enough air where the motor will ever be starved

Thanks

My filter gets enough air with it right where the battery is suppose to be, plus it is protected very well sitting inside the engine bay.

i had mine dropped down directly below the hole made by the stock restrictor below the battery... but right now i have a filter directly off the HO mani, until i can get a real intake made... i mocked it up with a spectre to get a shape i could use to get a shop to fab me up a pipe.

u turns are never good on an intake...

This is probably one of the best spots for the filter to be located.

I've had my filter in this location for years and have never had an issue with it.
It does need cleaning more often here since it picks up alot of the dirt off of the road and it being placed so low to the ground.
Oh and for those worried about hydrolock, never had a problem with that nor an issue with the heavy rains we get here in the Deep South.

Good luck with your relocation and do get rid of that Spectre filter and buy a K&N for additional power from your car that the Spectre can't give you.

i went from only buying K&N to buying spectre, never once noticed a difference. both give the same power, only spectre is cheaper

I agree with James. I've had my filter in that spot, works great. The wheel liner and bumper and all will keep it dry. Keep that filter where you got it and the first time it rains good and you're driving, I wouldn't be surprised if your engine stalls on you.

I thought that air in motion is lower pressure anyways. You wouldn't want to have the filter where that bumper is making the air flow around it.

This is what i hope to do. Thanks for the pics.

Question though: did you remove your window washer fluid box? idk what year your car is but mine is a 04 and the washer fluid box is right where your intake is?

Colby, yes, I did remove the windshield washer tank to house the much larger air filter than what came with the original intake.
With a smaller filter, you could keep the washer tank in the spot with no worries but I wanted as much space around the filter as possible for the best possible air.

And Red2.2, I had a Spectre filter and when I was doing my cai vs wai evaluation which took about 3 months of testing at the track, the Spectre filter made me gain a tenth every time I installed it in place of the K&N.
Maybe with the 2.2 engine there's no difference in the performance of the car between the K&N and the Spectre but with the LD9 engine, you can tell the difference.

i also did it on my 89 dodge spirit turbo (it was actually pretty damn quick) and i thought it was just about the same. maybe ill have to buy my dad a spectre for his LS1 to see if it makes a big difference

I had a AEM CAI on my 04 for a little while, it has the filter in the fender like that. Then I started no notice how much deep standing water there was around here (FL) during the summer rains. I got rid of it and stayed with WAI from then on.

Weapon R makes a cold air box for the Js. It fits pretty much any intake on the market. Its not perfect but some heavy vinyl seals up the sloppy areas very well. Gives all the cold air and power of a CAI but with the safety of a WAI.
