fixing o2 sensor issues with intake / exhaust mods
Sunday, March 28, 2010 8:33 PM
ok i have a 2.2 with short air intake, 4 to 2 to 1 header, magna flow high flow cat, and coffee can muffler lol. all these mods are trippin out my o2 sensor and CEL stays on, and this issue has sent my carvi into limp mode and the car runs like @!#$. what is the best way to correct this problem, ive heard of o2 simulator ( tried it) dont work, no one in my area is able to flash my computer to make it read the values as ok. is there something i can buy to flash it myself that dont require a nascar sponsor lol to pay for it, becuz if it cost more to buy the programmer than to replace to stock its not really worth it.

Any help would be great

look up the fouler mod. it raises your o2 sensor higher than your exhaust so its not reading your actual exhaust/

a casper o2 simulator worked find on mine when i didnt have a cat on but somethings has to be making it seem bad weather a bad cat or an electrical problem if you have a cat with just a header and an exhaust it shouldnt mess with it to much i know i dont have a header but i have 2 1/2 pre and post cat piping and mine works fine

actually have that on there now, still wont go off, it does take the sensor about an inch out of the flow. still reads too lean. that was def the cheapest mod at 5 dollars for a bung extender

http://www.andysautosport.com/chevrolet/1995_1999_cavalier/performance/power_programmers/piggy_back_programmers/jet/

the first site has a home use programer that would be nice to have, but a lil more expensive than i might want to spend

the 2nd is reasonable if it actually works, says i can remap the fuel system with this piggy back system. it can be done with the controller and the unit stays within the car

the sensor you put the antifouler on doesnt read rich/lean.

Thats what i thought... i didnt think our cars had a "limp mode"

If you do not know what you are doing, you can blow your motor with HP Tuners... i'd leave that to experienced tuners only!!

its a p0420 the lean out code

the guy that reverse engineered the casper o2 simulator design, made a pefect diagram, installed it today and car works fine now, his site is http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/oxygen_sensor_simulator/. just make this part and your o2 problems will be solved

i was told by two gm mechanics.......that if you let your o2 sensor problem go on for a long time the car goes into a safe mode or "limp mode"

 if you're getting a too lean code its for the front 02 sensor, the one that reports your fuel air mixture to the computer. I'd guess you have a vacuum leak or your header is leaking really badly. If you were throwing an emissions code then that would be the rear 02 and solved with a simulator or spark plug defoulers.

PO420 DOES NOT MEAN LEAN

it's telling you either

a) the cat isnt working properly
b) the POST CAT o2 sensor itself is damaged/faulty

the antifouler mod will fix this issue if your cat isnt up to par.

catalyst below efficiency you have to drill holes in the cat and measure temp i think? most common
causes include faulty cat but you could also have a leak
maybe the second 02 sensor has reached the end of its life?
