Another flywheel question
Sunday, June 14, 2009 8:37 PM
I always ask dumb questions but is it possible for me to tear the center out of a lighter flywheel. I hear it happens occasionally, with my setup is it possible?

I dunno what flywheel and what is your set-up? Fidanza's have been known for it on the LD9 applications, im not sure about LN2 or L61s.

I doubt you would do it with your current set-up you have listed in your profile, but not totally impossible. If it's a cr@ppy flywheel or it's an abused used one, them maybe yes.

well im just running bolt ons and mounts but I do drive pretty hard about all the time, I just didnt want to buy one if ill break it right away. Plus I dont want to damage anything. I thought fidanza's flywheels were good but still it happens. Would an LSJ flywheel work or are they a completely different design. I know it is supposed to have a thicker center

if you have a fidanza it really wont matter what kind of power level you have. odds are the center will be sheered. ive seen/heard of it done on several n/a cars.

I'm tired of wasting my time... now I'm breakin' free.

If it's made by a reputable mark, is meant for your app & it meets SFI-certification... you have nothing to worry about.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

Has anybody first hand had this happen to them?

Never seen it on a J but i have seen it happen. Thing tore itself right out of the tranny, they can do some damage when let lose. Its like taking a heavy saw blade up to 4 or 5 thousand rpm and letting it free, scary site. They ban shaved and aftermarket flywheels from my oval track. Some tracks make it mandatory to run a scatter shield, which is basically a huge armour plate to stop or slow down the flywheel in the event it tears itself free.

God, learn to use spell check Brad. It's SHEARED.

A stock lightened flywheel will be fine. A Fidanza has a decent chance of shearing which in my opinion is too much of a chance, considering the damage it can / will cause.

A dead stock flywheel will most likely be fine they are quite beefy. The only way I see you getting unlucky is if the stock one was severely damaged or flawed.

SPEC/Fidanza flywheel after about 16K of driving. I am just glad it didnt do anymore damage than crack the trans case near the diff.

The L61 flywheel has 6 bolts(flywheel to crankshaft) and the LSJ has 8.

I figured they were different since i have never heard of another member using one. I really thought shaving down a stock flywheel was more risky than buying a light weight one. Where would you shave it down at? anyone have any pics of one that the lightened up a bit...... how much is safe to take off of one

Now how many people on here have broken a spec flywheel. I dont think I would break mine if it was installed right with as much power as I am running. I am runnning near stock horsepower.

3-4 people have posted pics of the center ripped out, and a few more have mentioned it has failed.
Spec no longer uses fidanza flywheels. FYI.

if ur flywheel is installed correctly u should be able to bag the living piss out of your car and not have any problems with it ive got a fidanza from summit in my car with dual fric clutch and ive had no problems with it but then again i paid like 1000 bucks to get mine installed at standard motors there are somthings the the saturday mechanic can do to his car and there are others that are the reasons why people pay retarted amounts of money to get done

Unless they changed the design it will still rip out the center. The BS excuse they used as the bad ones being a bad batch has been shown wrong many times, unless of course one batch spans several years of production.

I agree the Fidanza flywheels could still fail, but the new spec ones shouldn't since they changed the design.

With all the BS i went through with Spec I will never buy another one of their products regardless of how they are now. I hope they completely redesigned the center section to prevent further failures.
