Do I need a tune for these cams?
Wednesday, May 13, 2009 2:18 AM
I have a '98 Z24 that needs a water pump. I plan to put the hex drive in a LO intake cam, run batch fire and ignore the CEL due to no CPS signal and a HO exhaust cam with the 2.3l exhaust cam tower and 35mm lifters. I remember seeing somebody running this same cam setup in a 9.3:1CR built motor and laying down decent HP and TQ numbers. Thing is, this car is may daily driver and I mean 80-120 deliveries a week for Jimmy Johns... Other than to get rid of the CEL for the CPS signal, does anyone think I NEED to do any sort of a tune? I know drive-ability will suffer a bit, it comes with the territory of making more power. But is there any significant risk of blowing it up due to a lean condition?

Also, I have over 200,000 miles on the car. I plan to replace the water pump, install the cams, put on a new crank pulley and alternator, and put on a header during this little adventure. Dumb question, but what else should I do while I have all this apart?

All angles, experiences, flames, ideas, instructions, jokes, recommendations, setups, testimonials, VISAs, Mastercards, and AmExs, will be accepted...

Well, while some people will tell you differently, IMO, any change in cams should mean a tune to match.
