X-Force muffler - Performance Forum

I have a 1.5 yr old son, and I do not like the turbo muffler on the wife's Sunfire because of the inside noise.
While it sounds nice, it is not doing my kid's hearing any good.
I read around on ways to retain performance through a silent muffler.
I found the X-Force muffler that has a throttle actuated selection of silent mode and balls out.
The balls out mode has almost zero resisitance in flow.
The silent mode closes off the straight through and routes it through the baffling, which is less HP, but sounds like you are stock again.
I am tempted, as when my son is not in the car, it can be selected to for performance or silence.
Some days I just don't like pulling up to the light and the engine noise attracts unwanted attention (Hondas mostly).
I will be supercharging my wife's Ecotec here soon, and I see they have a 3 inch model X-Force that might just have to be had.
It is pricey, but the cost of sound deadening the trunk will cost more, add weight, and probably still be too loud.
These mufflers are...$250, yeah, too much money, but for what I need it for it is a bargain.
I might be getting one of these mufflers installed at the same time as the SC kit.
My wife's 2003 Ecotec 2.2 liter Sunfire:
* 2 1/4 inch turbo muffler
* 2 1/4 piping to a 2 1/2 inch resonator
* 2 1/4 inch catalytic converter
* 2 1/2 inch down-pipe
* a match ported 4:2:1 RK Sports 'clone' header
* an AEM true cold air intake NOPI edition
* 8 gauge ground wire kit
* Toyz front strut brace
* Vibrant rear strut brace
* and Russell stainless steel brake lines all around.
what brand turbo muffler? they are NOT all created equal, thrush is about the worst you can get. if you want it quieter, get a dynomax. also, if you're going anti-loud, 3" is the wrong way to go.

3" is the opposite way, but in silent mode I don't think I am getting 3" sound.
Supposely it sounds like a stock muffler.

$250 is a lot for a muffler that you can get something that's quiet, and flows just as good as, for most likely less than $80.

That is probably true, but I was hoping for a selectable max flow and sound to dead silent muffler set-up.
I like the concept, but I am at work and can't go to youtube and see if the muffler does what it says it can do, because the I.T. people are pieces of $hit and don't allow that. I know for a fact those faggots are listening to their music and watching videos on their computer as they block everyone else.

you already have one of those selectors. you just use your foot. honestly, there are muffles that flow better, for less money, and are quiet when you're not at WOT.

As a guy that had tubes in my ear canals (Corrective earring surgery) to help them take shape until they were strong enough to hold it themselves, I can tell you that high-pitched noises (Such as sirens) will be more of a nuisance to your boy's young ears than a throbbing exhaust note. Moving on...
3"... Really? Do you honestly think you'll need that much area to flow the amount of gases that your engine will spew? 2-1/2" max is about it. If you need more, then tell us this: How'd you get a full-race car to be street-legal & drivable enough to use everyday? Oh, wait... It's not a full-race car? And isn't gonna be? Then why the run a full-race size exhaust?
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
I'm in the market for the same thing, a muffler that sounds stock as possible at idle, and roars at WOT.
i was thinkin apexi, but they are super expensive. over $250!
anyone have links on cheaper mufflers? I'm running 2.5 exhaust with 4-2-1 header

I will probably get the 2.5".
I figured since I was going supercharged here within 4 months, I would go big.
The 3" does not sound loud in silent mode on a Subaru Forester, so I figured I would go that route.
I should just stick to the 2.5".

2.25" FTW.
The optimal operating range for our vehicles is best complimented with 2.25" tubing.
For performance (Read: mostly driven at high RPM) 2.5" is better suited.
For TURBO applications (only) 3" and up is what you want to go with because the characteristics of the exhaust flow are entirely different from N/A, bigger is always better.
When I have the supercharger installed, I am probably going to stick with the exhaust I already have but I am still tempted in getting a 2.5" X-Force muffler.
I understand it is probably not worth the price, but I really like the selectability of silent vs. performance.
The sound in the back of the car right now is very bassy.
I personally don't like the ringing in my ears from it and can't imagine my kid who has much better hearing likes it.
In fact, I don't want him going tone deaf, and if I spend $1000 to prevent that it would be worth it.
I checked into dynomat, and it is pricey for the material and the install.
The muffler will be cheaper in the end, and the extra gadgetry ups the fun factor.
This is a very interesting variant on the exhaust cut-off idea.
I think I will be ordering the 2.5" with dual outs for the wife's car.
Eventually I will be 100% 2.5", but this will be a year or two in the future.
I can only afford so much.

how big is your resonator? Why not buy a Walker muffler and get the largest resonator you can find and put it in.
I have a big resonator right now, it is as long as the piece of pipe between the cat and bend in the exhaust is.
I asked to install a second one, and found there is nowhere I can do it.
Whats the 411 on the Walker muffler?

I got a 2.5" full exhaust (header with 2.5" downpipe) with a straight through dynomax ultra ss muffelr and it's not that loud at all suprisingly (combined with a 28" thrush glasspack resonator that barely fits though) very little of the sound resonates inside the cabin, in fact I have to roll down the window almost to hear it

There is no easy ways to get HP, no magic box or gizmo... And if you get more hp, there's no way to make your car still behave and sound like a stock one. More hp usually makes your car louder, more vibrations and harder to drive...but still people hope or think maby there's some magic way to have it all, comfort, stock sound and drive.
Well if that is your case then you are running a 22" resonator much like me. What kind of resonator are you running? Some are built better than others. You could also move your cat forward much like FastFireTwoTwo and put in an even larger resonator. As for the Walker muffler, I do not know the part number but I do know that they are quiet. If I remember correctly Walker is the parent company of Dynomax. So the Walker is similar to that of the Dynomax Super Turbo but its even quieter. Someone else must know more. What size of muffler are your running as well? Maybe you can find yourself a much larger and longer oval muffler that is better chambered.
I have a Walker Quiet-Flow3 muffler right now, cat back 2.5 with no resonator. And I can tell you it doesn't drone in the slightest. Very quiet at idle and just cruising, and will bark a bit at WOT but not that much. I still plan on getting a long resonator to quiet it down even more.
Here are some pics and videos of my setup, I've very happy with it. It's probably a bit more restrictive than a straight through, but it's the only way to keep it quiet, and with the dual exits I'm sure back pressure is pretty low.
It's an 02 Camaro OEM replacement, part number 21417
Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
wow that is quiet. That thing will be silent once you get a resonator on there.
Yeah that's my current question, do I get a resonator, to cut out the highs and only quiet it down a bit, or do I get a glass pack and get it as quiet as stock.
I think I wan't it to have a bit of a bark at wot still...

Well, since the "old-school" sports-cars I told you about used resonator tips... and still had a fair amount of "bark" to their note... I'd say go with the tips @ this point. You can finds them in any J.C.Whitney or Pacesetter catalog.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".

Yeah I bought a smallish sized walker cat and move it forward a bit, small section of pipe for the o2 sensor, then it's the 28" total overall length thrush glasspack resonator (looks just like a cherry bomb), then right after that the axle-over piping and muffler.
