I got a 97 2.2 ohv brand new engine and got just over 250 miles to a tank of gas. Yeah i might drive a little fast, but it should still be over 300 miles easy (my girlfriends 2.2 gets way into the 350+- range per tank)
Only symptom is that i can smell gas when i crank the car, but while im driving and idling and warm cranking the car i dont smell any gas. plus there is no fuel leaking anywhere its just the fumes. I park on a clean concrete slab and check for leaks that way.
Could there be a leak in the fuel feed line o ring where it connects to the engine? Will a fume leak cause a pressure leak that could affect my gas mileage that dramatically?
if it truely is a brand new engine.....gas milage will be lower until the rings seat.
Also ANY fuel leak is not good & needs to be fixed.
To expand on what John said: After I got the LN2 (2.2L) rebuilt in my truck (At a cheapo shop), and had broken it in, I was dismayed at the fuel-mileage return I got from it until the sub-standard timing-chain set in it failed at 35,000mi. It sat for a good while & after I did a compression check (Twice) with the rocker-arms loosed & venting the cylinders to let air in via the gauge's hose, I replaced the chain set with GM parts & began to get better mileage than when I had to run it with a hollowed-out catalytic-convertor (24.75mpg vs. 24.5, to be exact). I went after the shop that installed the engine over the premie failure of the chain, only to find that they went outta business.
Beware as some replacement timing sets are substandard & will fail you at a moment's notice. If you got your short- or long-block replaced for cheap odds are there might be one of these chains used in it, and if you're lucky (Like I was) it will fail the next time you go to start the engine at home just as you're cranking it over.
I just thought I'd try to warn you... Hopefully that won't be the case for you.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
Yeah ive already checked the input/output of the fuel rail and there is no fuel leaking. and no fuel is leaking around the injectors, but still there is a smell when i crank the car. Im sure i can search around and figure something out
yes it is a 3 speed auto, but my gf's is a 3speed also without the same problem.
The engine was definately not cheap, it has a cloyes lifetime timing chain kit on it. And I installed the engine and ran into no problems putting it in.
Is there a fuel vent line coming from the tank to anywhere on the car? I didnt bother looking while the engine was out maybe i didnt hook it back up?
also....you shouldnt compare gas mileage by "tanks" unless your using actual gallons. the difference in the gas gauges and your lead foot could be the reason for the difference
The only vapor line from the tank runs to the charcoal-media vapor-absorbsion canister, and that's under the rear of the car near the tank (IIRC). Have you really checked the fuel line along the under carriage? Just asking...
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
Yes I checked the fuel line. But sometimes you can not eyeball these things. So I am just going to use a fuel pressure gauge and change the fuel line o-rings
