MAF sencer problem
Monday, September 01, 2008 8:53 PM
I have a 96 cavalier 2.2 5 speed. My maf sencer that is in the intake is not working. It is not getting the 5 volt signal it needs. I have tryed splicing into my coolant temp sencer for the 5 volt signal but all that does is take out my coolant temp sencer and guage. I realy dont want to trace the wire all the way throught the harness. Is there a better way to find out what the problem is? Is there a faster or easier way to fix this problem?

You'll have to trace it out or get a service manual with a wiring schematic that will show you where the other end of the wire is for ohming out.
Try swapping out the Map sensor or the ground that is associated with the sensor itself.
It could be as simple as a bad ground.
Good luck.

Thanks. I have tried to find a wiring schematic but all I have available to me is all-data and mitchel on demand. they're not very helpful. what kind of service manual do you recommend?

Sensor in the intake? In the intake tube, or in the intake manifold?

BTW, its a MAP sensor, not a MAF sensor.

I was thinking he was talking about the IAT sensor. Do you have a code, or check engine light on because of this? If so what code?

Intake manifold. right next to the throttle-body. Sorry my bad MAP sensor. On mine its a green connector.

It did set a code but I don't remember which one. the sensor is right behind the TPS sensor on the upper intake manifold on the drivers side of the manifold.

Chiltons or Haynes. I have both for my S-truck with the same engine as you. Doubt the wiring's the same since when I glanced at the J-car's at a parts store it included a few items that weren't found in the truck.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

have you double checked the plug is clean and making positive connection with the sensor? there usually gets to be a green build up on one of the prongs (probably the 5v reference since thats what the code is for) on the connector, and the sensor malfunctions.

if thats the case, clean the connector (or replace it) and you get the sensor working again.
