I was a bit surpiised to fing my RWD entry in the general forum moved to newbies after owning my 99 Sunfire vert for 9 years and being a JBO member for the past five years.
The response to my thread indicated that some JBO members appear to be unaware that RWD j-bodies are not at all unusual and that Gravana Tuning is not respobnsible.
I attended the NHRA Supernationals last weekend at Englishtown, NJ. The event was marred by the tragic death on Saturday of funny car driver Scott Kallitta, the son of the Bounty Hunter, Connie Kallitta.
I have seen cars run in the SS/GT class for many years and there were at least three cars, two Cavaliers and a Sunfire running front engine small blocks with rear wheel drive at Englishtown on Sunday.
I believe that the SS/GT class was created to tone down the endless parade of Camaros, Novas and Mustangs in the stock classes. It allows front engine cars to be reconfigured for drag racing by allowing any V-6 or V-8 engine from the same manufacturer and year of manufacture to be used in the cars. For drag racing the cars must weigh a minimum of 2500 pounds. The Olds Calais, Pontiac Sunfire,/G6/Grand Am and Chevy Cavalier/ Cobalt are just some of the cars appearing in the SS/GT class.
The class designations range from SS/GTA to SS/GTM with weight breaks from 8.00 to 14.00+ based on a ratio of vehicle weight to NHRA factored horsepower.
All of this is clearly outlined in the NHRA Rulebook on pages 155-158. The Rulebook is available for $10.00 at NHRA.com.
In short, there are many V-8 RWD J-Body drag racing cars in all of NHRA's seven divisions. If you want to see them and speak to the drivers you can go to Norwalk, OH where the NHRA Powerade Tour arrives this weekend. Or at, Denver, CO, Seattle, WA, Sonoma, CA, Brainerd, MN, Reading, PA, Indianapolis, IN, Concord, NC, Dallas, TX, Memphis, TN, Richmond, VA, Las Vegas, NV, or Pomona, CA as the Powerade Tour progresses through the summer and fall.
Now to return to my original questions.
Does anyone know of a shop in your area that is building cars for the SS/GT class? There probably aren't too many and they are most likely high quality builders to meet NHRA specs for the class.
Is it possible to make an SS/GT car street legal?
I want to thank Ben (Tabasco) for offering data concerning Smith Performance Specialties which offers parts for the front engine conversion. Ben is a class act and his Gen II white interior is in my Gen III car.
For those who still doubt the viability of front engine RWD J-Bodies see the following:
alright.
this proves what exactly? a race shopped drag only jbody isn't late breaking news. this post is common knowledge.
any of these RWD conversion cars street'd?

this quote made me lul. not only ARE rwd j's completely unusual, the Gravana Tuning comment made in the other thread was a joke.
Check out my build thread!

Over your 9 year ownership and 5 years of membership, you've made 65 total posts. We all know that there are RWD
DRAG ONLY cars, however there are only one or two streetable rwd setups in existance. 99% of the people who come here and ask about RWD "conversions" are newbies wondering about bolt-on kits and expectations of drifting with GTO's and Mustangs.
On top of all that, this is a PERFORMANCE post, and at best, should be placed in the PERFORMANCE forum. General is not a dumping ground for posts you are too lazy to put in the right spot.

RWD V8 DRAG RACING (<~~~~~~key word there) jbodies are nothing new in the NHRA. but they are only used for racing. i dont see one of those cars on the street. do you?
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
i thought about a Cav AWD, do a 2200, 3400, 3800 use a 05-+3400 5speed Auto its an AWD trans you will need a custom shaft and a Rear diff that isn't ON DEMAND but it could be a good idea maybe after i finish my 3800SC swap i will look more into this and make it street drivable

How long until this post gets moved to the Newbies forum?
Well to answer the original question try S&W Racecars they make complete tube chassis kits for J-body cars or you can take the body to them and have them build it. It will be very expensive though, but I think it would be coolto have a rwd street Cavi with a built LS1 engine and T56 trans.
I second that. A streeted rwd Jbody would be cool as hell
that would be cool, now that the northstar is in a cav that raises the bar

So, when do we see a drift J?
Caution: I have an odd sense of humor, so don't be offended by the things I say
MMMM, HIDs
im still looking to see a a boosted 2.6L stroker converted to rear wheel
could you see there faces when they see the rear wheels smokin and the blow off cherping in a Z24
i would love to see that
See thread titled: Re-newing Old-Scool: Ecotec in a older-model econo-car!
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
I am looking for a cavalier right now for everyday use for a year or two. then i would love to strip it gut it and design a RWD car that still sits low to the ground, other than seeing the rear tires peeling out you would not know it was RWD. i would love to find a 4th gen f-body as a donner for all the susepnsion and powertrain. It would be a ton of work obviously but that would be fun as hell to do.
Well, at least you guys necroposted an OLD stupid thread as opposed to starting a new one....
