My new exhaust setup is too loud! Can it be quieted down?
Sunday, April 13, 2008 10:25 AM
I just got a full header back exhaust done a few weeks ago and it is way louder than I was expecting . It's a 2002 ECOTEC with Pacesetter armor coated 4:1 header, 2.25" mandrel bent dual outlet piping, Magnaflow 16" high flow catalytic converter (#94035), Magnaflow 22" resonator (#10435) and 2 Magnaflow 4" x 9" oval bodied mufflers (#14315). Everything is fully welded.

I am wondering if there is anything I can change / add to quiet it down a lot more. I have heard two different suggestions; get rid of the Pacesetter header in favor of the stock header and get rid of the Magnaflow mufflers in favor of something else. Is there any truth to either one of these suggestions?

Help! It's way too loud and is driving me nuts!

get rid of the magnaflow mufflers and get the dynomax super turbo mufflers, will be close to stock. but you will know its not factory. thats what a lot of people are running.

Get rid of the maglaflow mufflers for 2 Dynomax super turbo mufflers. That would quiet things down fairly well. Maybe see if you can fit a longer resonator in place of the one you already have on there.

Alright. Thanks for the info guys . I'm going to look into the Dynomax mufflers right now. Also, I was thinking of maybe getting a little bit longer Cherry Bomb to put in place of the Magnaflow resonator? Any thoughts on this?

It wouldn't hurt if you have enough room under there to run one.

Okay, after looking at the Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers I see a problem; the current Magnaflow mufflers I have have centered inlets and outlets. None of the Dynomax mufflers are like this. They're all either centered / offset or offset / offset. I am wondering how this will work with my current piping setup? For example, would this Dynomax muffler work?

Also, out of curiousity, will putting the stock header back on make any diference in the sound? I would rather remove the header if it will make a significant difference than having to buy two brand new mufflers.

Okay, scratch the removing the header part.

If I replace the Magnaflow mufflers with Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers and the biggest Thrush resonator I can fit under there it sounds like it will sound a lot better from what I'm reading...

Yeah, I was looking at Ryan's (Darkstars) setup and I see he has a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler and a 31" Thrush resonator and I remember him saying in a post that it sounds basically stock which is exactly what I want. Guess I better start saving my money to re-do it. All I have to say is it better sound a hell of a lot better this time around ! I am so tired of having a loud exhaust .

Thanks for the help guys.

Also, would it be possible / a good idea to get the resonator and mufflers powder coated since they're not stainless steel? I want to know this so I can have them powder coated so I can figure that into the cost.

Switch to a single outlet exhaust with just one muffler, that will quiet it down.

im running a turbo which quiets it down, a 28" resonator, dynomax super turbo, 2.5" and hope its not loud. havnt started teh car yet. id say dont worry about powder coating it
wait for it to bake the paint off, then rub anti sieze on it with a rag. holds up and wont rust at all.

i tend to think its the header you put on that is making the increase in noise. But also changing the mufflers to Dynomax's might help but taking off the header is your cheapest option IMO.

idk if you look at the difference between the stock manifold and the pacesetter header, its not the header making the most of the noise. its the mufflers.

I am running a 3" exhaust with a 30" resonator and a Magnaflow muffler from a 98-02 TA / Camaro and its not all that louder then factory.. there is nothing i hate more then a high pitched exhaust and with my set up its a lower tone (not quite a V8 low tone obviously) but alot deeper then stock and not much louder.. so that would be my suggestion but since you already have the system i would say go to a single muffler set up.. flow master and magnaflow are so close to the same design its all up to personal preference.. they will give a slightly different tone but there isn't one thats going to be less noisy then the other..

Will simply adding the biggest possible resonator that will fit make any difference in the sound? I really don't want to get rid of the header and I also don't like the fact that the Dynomax mufflers aren't stainless steel and don't come in center / center inlets and outlets.

This car will never have a single outlet exhaust. It's a Sunfire GT, it wouldn't look right with a single outlet exhaust!

i really dont think its your header, its the mufflers. and if your exhaust guy cant make offset/center mufflers work, he needs to be shot.

and what i think he meant was do it camaro style. one muffler single inlet, dual outlets. as far as the mufflers not being stainless, its gonna take a while to rot them out for sure. but depends on if you want to sacrafice noise for looks.

Go with the Dynomax super turbo's they are not a straight through style muffler like your magnaflow's. Dont buy flowmasters they sound like sh!t on 4 bangers cause they have no packing material in them, you dont get the nice deep mellow sound like the packed mufflers. They just have steel baffling, good for muscle cars not our cars. Buy Dynomax!

I like how it sounds.

Trade ya? haha, yea i know you wont do single outlet. You haven't heard mine since I got it done tho

Id say try different style mufflers, Why change the resonator after you got all that done, it would probably not be too worth it. Get some quieter mufflers on it and you should be ok.

My resonator is short, 14" i think, and its quieter than yours.

I wanna hear it again if you change it!

I'm running pacesetter 4-1, no cat, no res and straight back to dynomax turbo straight through muffler with mandrel 2.25" exhaust

Well the air has to go through a sc and built motor before it goes out the exhaust, so Im sure that helps the sound a little haha
