Glasspack muffler as a ressonator?
Thursday, April 03, 2008 2:11 PM
I did a search.. could not find the answer I was looking for.. but I almost swear I've seen this asked somewhere..

is there anything wrong with using a glass pack muffler as a resonator?

I have a resonator already but its short and still makes rasp at higher rpm's..

I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this.. or try this..

Thanks in advance

yeah a glasspack works as a res just fine.

lol, never thought of using a 35$ cherry bomber as a resonator...does it work well? does it hinder proformance at all?

taking the 2200 out of the cavy and throwing it into the sunfire, taking the 3100 out of my friends GrandAm and throwing it into the cavy. XD Definatly a work in process...

That's what I'm using, it was like 23 bucks at Pepboys for a 30" muffler in 2.5".

vincent is your engine subframe stock? mine is solid no holes. must be for the 2003+ becuase where the 2.2 ohv exhaust went is where that metal is? extra bracing from the factory?

yeah its stock, BTW, dont use it as a jacking point

and i think my glass pack is 28" long and was like $30

Vincent you went through all that trouble of a stainless exhaust and put a glasspack on it that will start to rust after a 1000 miles, you should upgrade bro.

is your glasspack the one with the tons of lips sticking out? and how does it sound?

ive got a 24" one sitting in my garage right now.. i dont work tomorow so it a cut and weld day!

THANKS AGAIN!!! JBODY.ORG 4tw!

The "lips" are louvers. You don't want to use a louvered core glasspack, get a perforated core glasspack. The louvers disrupt the gas flow, while the perforated cores flow just about like a straight pipe.

Watch for the core diameter, some are smaller than the in/outlets, which will choke the flow down. Some may have larger cores, which can reduce the gas flow velocity, which may hinder your low to mid range torque.

I got raped on my resonator compared to the rest of you.

Magnaflow #10435

thats what everyone thinks. i want the paint to bake off as fast as possible, then im going to coat it in anti-sieze and it wont rust out. believe me it works. and the price of stainless resonator vs reg was $100 difference.

well balls.. it is a "louvered core".. but im sure theres an advantage to having that right? its a 2.5" pipe wich a little choke on that probabley wont hurt me because im larger than stock.. ill give this thing a try and see how it sounds.. i really dont want to re-re-do my exhaust again..

im going to give mine a try tomorow and see how it sounds despite it being "louvered".. hopefully it kills the rasp.. and mabye quiets down a bit..

I've never heard of that, I'll have to give it a shot.

23" cherry bomb perforated glass pack muffler (aka resonator)

On the car just after the magnaflow cat

all that sets between a Pacesetter 4-1 header and a Pacesetter Monza muffler..... it all works and sounds fine.

Alright its in.. installed it this morning almost killed myself when I welded it inplace and an arc thing went into my ear.. cars a little quieter.. little bit deeper noise.. beter than before by a whole lot.. still rasp at higher rpm's but mabye its a 2.5" piping on a 4 cilinder.. or mabye its my hooker muffler.. any ways not worried about it right now mabye in a month or so ill install a magnaflow duel exit muffler.. (avoiding fart cans like the pleauge)

But thank you all for the info and answering my questions.. this is the best forum on the net.

^^ hooker mufler?

Did you get the Maxflow?

I got one, and it took about 1 1/2 weeks before the rasp went away.
I thought the thing was broken.

But its all good now. 2.5" cat and piping, no resonator.
But no header either.

No i got the Aero chambered one.. maybe max flow.. dont remember..

but yeah i've had it on for about a month and still rasp at higher RPM's.. im alright with it..

my effin ear is killing me though.. i don't think i did any major damage just cosmetic.. mabye melted some wax or something..

Thats why I paid a shop $30 to weld mine in for me...

meh.. it will be all healed up by tomorow..

its hard to compensate spending the money for a shop to do things when i have the means right at my very own home.. and i love telling people that i did it myself.. and that i dont attend effin U.T.I. or Whyo tech..

i fit a 45inch resonator under my car. i had no cat'.

basically welded it in right after the downpipe and it went to the first bend by the gas tank.

i loved the way it sounded.

^^At least you learned how to weld. That's more than all 4 years of my ASE-Cert training at the local county college did for me. Oh well, I guess I can always return & take their welding course. BTW: The idea with the louvers is that if they're faced into the exhaust flow they effect better silencing. If faced the opposite way the flow rate of the muffler goes up by the silencing isn't as effective. This is why the suggestion to use glasspacks with a perforated core gets made so often... It allows unhindered flow while being throughly effective in silencing. Hmmm... I think I'll go over to the Aeroflow muffler sight & see what kind of sizes & construction their mufflers have, since I remember them being alot like glasspacks.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

I know how to use a welder.... but I've never actually welded anything..... I supose If I had all the stuff at home and was good at welding.... I would do it myself too.... I'm the same way with everything else on my car.... the thought of bringing it to the shop never crosses my mind with my car exept for welding up exaust parts and installing tires on rims.

The biggest thing with the cherry bomb is that it will break in a little over time and get a little louder again since it's a glass pack.... IDK if regular resonators do that or not.
