3,1 turbo in 3rd gen???
Wednesday, April 02, 2008 10:35 PM
So i have a chance to get a grand prix (iirc) with the 3.1 turbo engine for about $400. I know its been done, but how hard would it be to swap this engine into a 95 or newer cavalier with a 5spd?? Ive actually driven a 96 with this setup but it was years ago and i dont remember anything about it!!! The car runs now, just needs alot of work that i dont want to do, so figured the engine alone is worth the price.

hmmm, i wonder how u use this signature thingy

It would be similar to the 3400 swap in difficulty. It should bolt to a five speed that comes with an LN2 OHV engine, and it physically should fit in the engine bay. In many states it's illegal to replace the engine with one thats older than the car. In terms of power, if you're going all-out, better to build the 3.1 first, because the 3400 has more bang for the buck. Many have reported that it can make a good deal more power over stock with poweradders.

Most here will probably say its not worth it or you'll never complete it, but it is certainly doable, just like the Northstar swap

Dump that engine in another GP w/a 5-speed. I would have loved to have found a 3.1 Turbo for my 89' GP 5-speed.
