ok, well my 086 head cracked and i needed a replacement. i went to a machine shop where they reman heads and ask them a 086. they transfer my ss valves to the new head but when i came to pick up the head, they were no casting on it. it was grinded. i asked the guy why this was done, he told me he didn't know, the head came from another city as they dont store them here and it was like that. now my question is how do i tell if its a real 086 or not a 955 or whatever?? i know my ss valves that were on my 086 before are on that head, so if the valves only fit the 086 then fine, i have a real one, but i just wanna make sure before i rebuilt the engine again.
i can provide pics.
any help would be appreciated.
thanx
grinded number = fishy
Pictures would help for sure.

2.3 Ho
roughly judging from the valve sizes it looks like an 086. or near variant. At least its not an LO head or a 2.4 head

I give up...
i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
from what i hear only the early casting heads could use the metal Tstate housing on the side of the head..i dont think that housing would fit on any of the later HO or LO heads if im correct...so take alook and that and see if it takes the metal one or the plastic one..but judging by the exhaust ports it "looks" good
its the same as my old 086 and use the metal one. i thought that the plastic one was only used on the 2.4.....
i was under the same impression for a while...but cavfan1 is using the plastic one on his HO and says the metal one wont fit and keeps telling me how he wished he still had an 086 so his housing would stop breaking
I believe the 086 and 955 heads both used the metal thermostat neck, while the 456 and Twin cam heads used the plastic one.
