4 different 2.4 slugs...
Thursday, January 03, 2008 8:50 PM
Well last night when I was tearing my built motor down and I was comparing some pistons I had lying around with the ones inside it. Inside the motor are 9.5:1 forged Wiseco's (or so I think they are), Paul Tjepkes gave me his two bad 10.5:1 Wiseco forged pistons that came out of his first motor, I also had a couple of stockers lying around-a 96-99.5 (9.5:1) and a 99.5-02 (9.7:1).

So I snapped some shots comparing all four. I even took a shot that shows that the two stock pistons are indeed different (which we all know but a lot of people dont understand how).

From left to right, they go:

9.5:1 Wiseco, 10.5:1 Wiseco, 9.5:1 Stock (96-99.5), 9.7:1 Stock (99.5-02)

if you look closely at the above shots you can see the dish in the third piston (Stock 96-99.5). Here is a side view that blatently shows the dish. You can also see the teflon coating the skirt has on the side on the 99.5-02 piston.

And here's where it gets tricky, can somebody explain how these two are only one point of compression different? (From left 9.5:1 to right 10.5:1) To me looking at that huge dish (mine thats in the block) it seems like it should be more like 8.5:1 maybe. I just don't know for sure as I bought this engine from somebody that had it all put together at a shop and I'm going by what he TOLD me. So any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry to sorta thread jack...

But what about using the factory 99 + flat tops pistons and block with a 96 head? The deck heigth is different correct?

Looks more like my 9:1 Wiseco's. That isn't a 9.5:1 piston.

All quad4/ld9 engines have a "0" deck height. Any LD9 slug will work in any year LD9.

The supposed Wiseco piston on the far left looks exactly like the 9.5:1 Wiseco's I put in my car...

May I say that Wiseco pistons for the 2.4 are 9:1 unless you go custom. Also, you can't tell me you think they are 9.5. They have a bigger dish than the 9.5 stocker so there's no question about it.

i dont. im going by what i was TOLD they are. which is why i had the doubts about them being 9.5:1, hence why i asked. they do however have a couple number sets stamped into the top, im going to call wiseco soon and see if they can confirm exactly what they are.

i also thought that maybe the piston comes up a little bit higher than a stocker to compensate, but i doubt it as its completely flush with the deck and so is stock.

My 9.5:1 Wiseco look alot like the One you have a picture of. I cant remember if the dish was that deep for sure though. I will have to look through my build pics. By the way mine were a custom order through car customs so I know they are 9.5:1
This is the only pic I have uploaded to photobucket. I will check for more when I get home.

Mine were ordered custom from Karo as well, so I know for a fact they are 9.5:1. I actually have my motor apart right now and am looking at the pistons. They look exactly the same to me.

I know I have more pics but can't find them...

Hmm...the more I look at it, mine seem to be deeper. But then again the shininess may be deceiving....

easy way to solve the issue... luke, whats the numbers on the very top of your piston? i will go look at mine tonight and see if they're the same as yours.

but yes, wade your dish does look to be less then mine and lukes (but pics are a bad way to compare). maybe if you didnt use a god damn camera phone insted of your digi cam????

I will have to go home tonight and take a look. I'm at work right now I will have to scrape away some carbon so I can read the numbers.

Yeah I think it is just that the pic sucks. Beleive me I am kicking myself for not getting better pics with my digi cam of everything.

oopps, sorry, i assumed you had just bought these or something lol. mine had some carbon build up on them to. i just used a wire wheel tool to clean them up, took all of 30 seconds a piston.
