ecotec pacesetter header poll: anyone have leaks
Wednesday, December 05, 2007 3:35 PM
I hate to even post this stupid topic but my dad who is a mechanic and a very good one at that has little experience with performance modifications like headers and such. I was talking with him about my plans to get a header and he said that all headers leaked, and that I would regret putting it on there. So I am humbly asking for peoples experience with this header so I can show him just how many people have gotten headers and not had any leak issues. Maybe then he will shut up and help me put the thing on.

Thanks,

Will

not all headers leak. granted i dont have a jbody yet, but on my ls1 powered t/a and on my friends LS1 cars, we used stock gaskets or re-used the stock gaskets. theyre metal gaskets and we've NEVER had any leak issues. the stock cardboard or papergaskets orr whattever the hell they are that come with the headers suck badly. do not use the gaskets that are supplied with the header. you dad is probably an old school guy who never put headers on any newer cars that dont require using the supplied gaskets. Go ahead and prove him wrong

haha who cares what he thinks about them just ask him to help you and if he doesnt he's an ass. If you install them correctly and torque them down to spec it will be fine. And you'll enjoy it so much that you'll want full exhaust, supercharger, nitrous, etc...... its like crack you do a little then you need to do a little more its a horrible cycle of downward spiral of spending money. You'll love it and hate it

use the stock metal gasket , make sure the ball and socket joint is tight , and re-check all the hardware every other day , after its installed , just to make sure everything is staying tight , and youll be good

i re-used my stock metal gasket with almost 100k on the motor , never had any leaks from it

i have had leak on mine a few times til i change out the headers. if your do get them they are good, but i recamend using a different gasket. they one they give are not good. also i recamend check the bolt at lest once a month to make sure they are still snug tight. i had to retighten mine a few time. I work at a shop too.

I hate it. mine leaks and rests against the car. But I'm not going to have to listen to this piece much longer.

Had my pacesetter on for 2 years now and no problems...No hitting or leaking...Use the stock exhaust gasket...And if you want go buy a new one at gm they are cheap...Make sure you buy the Armor Coated one..

I have a full pacesetter exaust on my car (except fot the cat and res) and I havn't had any problems..... The header is one of the cheap painted ones (wasn't painted anymore about 5 seconds after I started the car), I used the gasket that came with it... didn't use a tourgue wrench when I installed it (didn't have one), and it's been on there for about a year and a half with no problems.

The header doesn't leak at all.... although sometimes I wonder about the downpipe (ball joint).... I can't find a leak anywhere but sometimes it sounds like it might be leaking just a little bit under acceleration when I'm driving next to a cememt barrier..... it's prob just my paronoid imagination though.... either way... I havn't had any problems with it other than having to retighten the downpipe bolts again after the rest of the exaust was finaly adjusted correctly. (from the exaust moving due to incorect hangers)

Almost three years, no leaks. I used a stock metal gasket and have motor mounts(TTR upper/Prothane lower). I have the painted header, but I chemically stripped the factory paint off, scuffed the bare metal, cleaned it with Prep-Sol, wiped it with a tack cloth and repainted it with VHT High Heat Coating. I then cured the paint according to the directions on the can. No rust yet. I still recommend the Armor Coated Header, though.

same here man... ive been thinking it has to be that damn ball joint... only under acceleration too.. i thought i was going nuts.. im not alone! lol

it's the ball joint that leaks on mine. and it's the flanges that you tighten together that rest against the car. If this was going to be on my car longer I would cut it off and weld.

Ha ha,,,, at least some one else know what I'm talking about ... When taking of in reverse does your car make a sound like it has a horrible exaust leak too? I havn't fiqured that out yet either. It doesn't make sence..

If your installing a full exaust with the header... you might have to modify the mounting flanges some.... I had to cut off the tri flange that bolts to the cat off of my cat back and add some pipe before I could weld my cat inbetween the downpipe and the rest of the exaust. Both the header and cat back are designed to work with the stock exaust... not together as one.... wich struck me as extreamley odd... Youd think that if you ordered a complete exaust.... it would all just bolt together.

Or you could just use a longer resonator to make up the room (like I eventually did).... either way... once everything was welded in and set correctly... I havn't had any problems at all... although I have a LD9..... but the quality in question "should" be the same.
