I've been nosing around here for awhile and my 1999 sunfire just ain't cuttin it compared to my street driven 95 trans am with a fully built 385 and ati procharger pushin 12lb'z and some other goodies not meaning to brag or anything. Well i got a 96 cavilier with a 2.4 locked up due to lack of oil which is 5 speed. I plan on pulling everything off of the cavy and tearin into the motor to see what it looks like cuz all the junkyards up here want anywhere from 500 bux'z to 900 for just a 2.4 from anywhere. My ? is i want to change my sunfire from auto to 5 speed and use the computer from the 96 engine,trans and wiring well will the 96 computer plug and play with the 99 harness or is there cutting and splicing. I done know about the computer not be able to be tuned so i would switch it out. I know i want to punch the block 30 over do forged pistons not sure how much boost the stock rods will take. Do the 2.3 cams in it and intake. Is the motor worth tearing apart it was ran 3 miles with a hole in the oil pan and locked up the crank. I have everything to boost it besides intercooler,piping and manifold what would be a safe boost for the stock crank and rods plus compression ratio. I moreless want to build this thing to run well but be somewhat reliable so if there is anything you all would recommend i'd be thankful.
Well - I've heard of members building the 2.4 TC motor to over 200 hp n/a, with very good reliability.
Also there are members that use the GM Supercharger kit for the 2.4 TC motor, which is said to be quite reliable. A good way to get about 215-230 whp, for your sunfire - would be build up the 2.4 TC motor, and add the GM Supercharger. Sure you may have low boost (about 4-6 psi), but you should also get a good amount of power, fairly good gas mileage & pretty good reliability.
