i have an auto sunfire and was thinking about converting it but if i change out the torque converter to a higher stall and get a b/m shift kit will i run as fast as a manual or should i just convert it? also how much would i be looing at to convert it?

What are you plaining on Doin to the Car? if you goin to drag race it auto it better if the trans it built you wont shift as fast as an automatic. plus you can miss a gear an automatic wont so you could also take that in to a consideration.

go down to your local drag strip and look at all the 11.99 and faster cars. auto is the king of the strip.

if you have a turbo and a decent stall converter, turbo lag will become a thing of the past cause you don't have to lift the gas to swich gears

the disadvantage of the auto is that they are more of a parasitic loss and the 4t40 is not proven enough for me to go that route on a j-body.
though there are fast auto j's on here.

if you plan on autox avoid the auto like the plauge.

No...Third gear will kill you NA. If you hav a turbocharger, though, then it may be a different story.

i've never been a big fan of the stock 3T40 and 4T40s

be careful when modifying the torque converter... these transes are known to have defective Torque Converter Lock Solenoids...

and if your torque converter doesnt unlock when you come to a stop, its like driving a manual and pushing the clutch pedal when you come to a stop.

if your converter diddn't unlcok, and you stopped the car, the motor would stall. the locking feature inside the converter is what makes it a mechanical coupling and not longer a fluid coupling. there is actuall a big ass clutch ring that eguages between the converter body and the stator. so if it got stuck on it would be like stopping a car WITHOUT putting the clutch down. that and with that ring enguaged, shifting from neutral to gear would stall the motor.

what usually happens when a lockup selenoid goes bad is the lockup funktion does not enguage at all. it is designed like this becouse the factory knows that this thing can break and now when it does, you can still drive the car.

as a matter of fact, I have never heard of a selenoid breaking and keeping the converter locked. you can still drive the car, you just won't get as good gas milage

You could always just install a tranny cooler, shift kit, and trans brake. (if they make trans brakes that will work on your car that is).

get the transmission tuned with HPT. my shifts happen in .2 seconds.... how many people can shift a manual that fast?

We spent a good 2 hours in transmission class (NATEF & ASE Certified program) covering the 3T40 and 4T40s and this was brought up....

my originial post meant to say "and not pressing the clutch"... o.O dunno what happened there...

Just my thoughts on this. You might want to consider running a bigger aftermaket trans cooler and not using the one that is part of the radiator. Any transmission shop will tell you heat is the number one enemy to a auto trans. They might say abuse because an auto has the differential inside the trans and this makes abuse on front wheel drive cars worse then rear because you now have the added heat from the differential.

of course, i deff plan to get a bigger trans cooler, this gunna be completely rebuild prolly before the turbo, but unfortunately hahn racecraft is having problems with the automatic turbo cars? its something with the up shift down shift of the computer is what they told me so i hope they fix it.

but should i get the b and m shift kit or use hpt, i dont know how to tune tho is the problem?

I can

Therein lies the reason I've had to replace my shift cables twice, learned my lesson there (got a short-throw)

^^^ As far as learning lessons...... Me too.... my syncros are shot.. and now all the money that was gunna be used for modding has to go into a new tranny. Although the tranny that will eventually be going into the car won't be a stock Izuzu, and will be modded, so it's not all that bad I guess.
