Rebuilding head, hit a snag
Friday, September 28, 2007 10:08 AM
Hey.

I was pulling appart my spare eco head this morning and ran into a problem. The cap on the exhaust cam would not come off so I could remove the exhaust cam. So after massaging it with a hammer, I got it off.

Keep in mind im not a pro mechanic by any means,

1) does GM actually sell a replacement cap?
2) If so what is the part number?

Its a little chipped up so I dont want to re-use it. The &$#% ing thing was on there like it wasnt supposed to be removed but it had 2 bolts on it??

Opinions?

the best way to get that off I find is to gently lift the intake came on a diagonal.. it forces the cap up and away and it pops right out.

if you did want to massage it with a hammer, putting a screw in the topmost hole and tapping on that would have been better... wish you would have contacted me I coulda saved you a lot of trouble

I have one from my old stock head thats pretty much no good.. PM me and we can work out a price

Another question before I do something else stupid.

If you can see in the first picture I am missing some of the studs that are used for the intake manifold. Is there a tool that makes removing the studs easy? You know.... before I massage those with a hammer too

Yeah,

This head is off a junked car I think it was sitting for about a year. The damn thing was super glued on. Truth be told I tried levering it out with the intake cam but it was so stuck I thought I was going to warp the casting.

the intake mani only has 2 studs, the rest should be bolts

i forget the diam. and pitch.. but they're metric

do you have the little black thing to cover the hole for the EGR? I mean its not terribly important.. but you may want to cover it up with something.

I'll pm you back tomorrow i'm comin down with a cold but I definitely have that piece and it has your name on it.

9/32's or 5.5 mm socket will take the studs out iirc

I see, I thought I might have been missing some studs but there are only 2 so Im good, Ive got the EGR block off plate so Im ok with that.

Ill be waiting for your PM, thanks for the help.

there are sockets that look like a reverse Torx on the inside. I picked up a set for like $10-15. and you'll want them again when you take your head off. the two bolts on the side where the cam sprockets are.the exhaust side flange bolts are 8x1.25, intake side I don't know.for sure, but I think they are 6x1.0

you are going to want to bring that head to a machine shop now. if you install a new cap on there, nobody can guarantee that it will align properly. You will have to inquire about having that particular cam jornal machined for a bearing now.

I thought the two big bolts on the cap were to force propper allignment? Its going to a machine shop anyway, but by that logic, are you saying every cam cap on this head is specific to its base?

yes they are... well, according to the service manuals they are. they're supposed to go in at the same location in the same way they were removed from.

i wasnt talking about the location of the cap itself. i was talking about the cam journal... you will have to get it spec'ed out and possibly milled for a bearing.

I had this problem with an old F2T head.

but you dotn have to believe me... ive only been doing this stuff for YEARS

I know what your talking about,

If you dont mind ill take the advice from my machine shop, it will get measured for tolerance, its not like im going to slap this together and hope it works.
