086 head studs ARP Etc.

Where can you get head studs for the 086 head? I went to 2 parts stores today no luck. Only thing I find with the search is ARP performance head studs which I don't really need to pay 200 + dollars for head studs. The ARP's are more for bosted applications. correct?

boosted

or fully built applications... the ARP's are also reusable if you plan to remove the head again

i really really really want to say no... but i dont know for sure to be honest

Hopefully you are a quad4forums member... this is a thread explaining how to swap a 2.3 head on a 2.4 -- http://www.quad4forums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=457

no the 2.3 bolts have threads all the way up the bolt and the 2.4 only have treads half way up.

2.4 and 2.3 head studs are different. They are a different size to begin with. Are you looking to use a 086 head on a 2.4 block or a 086 head on a 2.3 block? If you are going to use it on a 2.4 block you can either run a 2.4 head stud kit or get your block machined to take the larger 2.3 head studs.

? since when can you NOT re-use 2.3 OR 2.4 head bolts? ive done it several times.

The head bolts stretch and cannot be reused, not reliably at least... (physically they can be used... but i wouldnt)

It's going on an 2.3 block. If I was putting it on a 2.4 block then I could use 2.4 head studs?

I'm talking about the studs that the exhaust and intake manifold hang from. Not the cylinder bolts going in to the block, so it should not matter what block the head is on these studs go through the head horizontally.

I am sorry I did not fully read your first post.

"head studs" or "head bolts" are universal terms for the threaded rods that holds the head to the block...which is why everyone was confused. But we understand now, so it's alright.

If I remember correctly, exhaust manifold uses two m10 and five m8 studs. And I think the intake manifold uses all m8 studs.

...and no, not even in a moderately boosted motor are manifold bolts/studs of ARP strength even close to being necessary.

Alright thanks, these manifold studs are not easy to find.

manifold studs is probably a better name for them.

This site looks like they might have them http://store.nutsandbolts.com/cylinder-head-and-manifold-studs-auveco.html#top

Does anyone know the exact sizes. The thing is I have to order like 10 of each stud from them. but I 'm pretty sure it's only 2 different sizes in the head

Those are all standard thread anyways. You want m8's and m10's (8mm and 10mm)

Oh, ok thanks, only thing with those studs is they don't have the hex head on the end.

GM says like 40-50 ft. lbs for torque for those studs might be hard to do with no hex head.

They also have metric studs http://store.nutsandbolts.com/studs-metric-cylinder-head-manifold-exhaust-auveco.html

I am going with ARP studs.

If a stud broke off in the head it would not be very fun to fix.
