1994 5 spd getreg 3.1 z24 a little in the mix.

Well as the tile says i got a 1994 z24 over the weekend with the getreg 5 spd. that being said. For now i am just going to drive it just to get used to the way it shifts first. BUT in the mean time i would like to start planing a swap. I have a car and a motorcycle on the side so no worries about transportation. I have read that raven did a 3800 swap but it was expensive well ok... how expensive? can't i just use the archie plate for 150 bucks for the 90 degree? or is it more to it than that. meaning is there cutting? Otherwise will that 3.4 dohc hook up to the getreg from the gtp grand prix and the cutlass of the early 90's? does it have the same motor mounts? and at this point would be worth it to just not do ANY swap and build the 3.1 for the 3.1 turbo motors. i am looking for about 250hp. then it will have a 10 for a weight ratio putting it in the 12's with the right suspension and tires.

So with all the reading i have done i am to the point. what do you advise i do?

Also i am reading that the coupe weighs 2509 pounds or is that just the 4cyl? how much more does the 6cyl weigh?

The 3800 won't need an adapter. It will require fabricating mounts, and highly recommended that you reinforct the subframe.

The newer 60 degree V6's will work very well for what you want to do. A 3100 or 3400 would be a much easier swap, and you could build them to put out the power you want without a ton of work. I believe this swap is the most efficient, since the engines aren't really that different physically. Many 2nd gen guys have done this swap.

All of the engines you listed will bolt to your tranny. While your doing the swap, you may want to look into changing the FDR in your Getrag. I believe you can convert it to a 3.94, but you'll have to check on it. Look in the transmission forum.

The DOHC 3.4 will bolt up as well, but will be more work. That engine would have a very good chance of giving you what you want with less modification, but the swap will be more involved.

To answer your weight question, the difference between a 4 and 6 is only about 150 lbs at most. Not big enough to really affect your power to weight ratio drasticly, but if you figure on the high side and shoot for that 10:1, you'll be safe with the numbers you want.

Do some reasearch, particularly on v6z24.com and 60degreev6.com, and make your decision based on all the info. Any of these swaps can be done, but you have to decide which one you think will best suit you.

That being said - what is more involved about the DOHC 3.4? does it not have the same motor mounts or are you referring to fitment and wiring? also so that means that it weighs at 2600 pounds or so- about how much does the back seat weigh as well as the trunk acc.? for weight reduction wise.

It also seems that the most efficient of the swaps i am down to the LG8 3.1 and the LQ1 dohc motor.

L67 is a much much more reliable and easily modable platform than either the LQ1 or the LG8. If you want 250whp the L67 is the only way to go. And not only will it put down the hp you want the torque will be way greater than that of the N/A LQ1 or LG8.

Well every time i try and search on a "how to" or raven on the subject- it is just people asking how to. there is no answer or how to - to do the 3800 swap. is there a link i am missing from raven or any other in relation to the 3800 L67?

Well that is generally my point it was done in a 3rd gen which if he shoehorned it in that my second gen should be easy. has anyone ever done it in a second gen?

No, it is not easy, do you understand this? Yes there are quite a few 2nd gen Js with 3800s, but unless you have the capacity to weld in new mounts for the engine, and to reinforce the radiator support to use it as a mount, along with the huge wiring headache - you will not have one.

The 3800 isn't that great anyways in its non supercharged form it only makes 205 horsepower, and about 240 lbs of torque. Where as a 3400 (not the the dohc 3.4), will utilize your current mounts except for 1, and run off of the 3.1 wiring harness. The 3400 is a weekend job, most of the 3800 swaps take months at minimum.

look on v6z24.com that site is 90% 2nd gen owners, and many have done motors swaps so any info you can get from them would be very valuable to you if your concidering a swap
