i have a 98 z24 5 spd, with the 2.4 twin cam. my friend has a 2.3 HO out of a 91 grand am and he gave it to me, im getting ready to put a new head gasket on it, what upper parts could i swap over from the 2.3 HO over to the 2.4 to get more power. could i swap over the cams or leave them alone, and what about the intake and the throttle body. lemme know what you think
thanks
yes to the cams, throttle body, intake mani. ,oil pump(have to mod)see thread with pics.and the head I believe.

intake manifold: either buy the fontana phenolic adapter flange, or port match it to the head
TB: yes, will work.
Crank pulley-smaller and lighter then stock 2.4's, bolts right on.
cams... you can use the exhuast cam without issue, just have to swap out the entire cam tower, and u need to use the 2.3 valve springs, good idea to have HP Tuners as well to compensate for the VCM
intake cam... u have to use the entire cam tower as well, but u need to either swap in the 2.3 power steering, or get the 2.4 PS's hex drive machined into the end of the cam for it to work. again, hp tuners.
Or, you can sell some parts to me
thanks for information now i can start to get busy on it all
if there is anything else you can think of let me know
lata
well, while doing the cams, u could swap over the 086 head while ur at it, but yeah... VERY high compression, im not so sure pump gas would run it, but i could be wrong...
pump gas will run just fine.
just curious..why arnt you swaping the whole engine in?..youd get more power than you will swaping PARTS of it..
The engines 16 years old...im not sure if thats a tough one to figure out...
So to do the secrete cam swap you have to change out the cam carriers. I was told that all you have to do is drop them in. As far as the head though, the 2.3 makes more power, will it bolt right on with no problems?

im not even sure what thats suppose to mean? does that mean that the engine that makes 30 more hp isnt worth it simply because its older? if so then you have a lot to learn

make more power ? yes, everything on the 2.3 makes more power...bolt right on? not exactly..iirc you need to modify the coolant lines on the block to match

this is not the secret cam swap.. he has a HO 2.3, which has much larger cams then the secret cams and the lifters are 35mm insted of the 33's that the stock 2.4 uses, the HO cams will not fit in the stock 2.4 cam towers.
Okay... so if he swaps out both cam towers, he can use both HO cams in the LD9 head right?
now DIE!
If I was you I would swap out the 086 Head use the HO Cams, machine the hex on the cam, ho intake manifold, 2.3 56mm tb, 2.3 ho exhaust manifold, 2.5" exhaust, and get ahold of Karo on a custom set of 8.5:1 CR pistons to keep your over all CR around 10:1. HP Tuners with a good tune and some lightened pulleys. They estimate you can hit over 200whp with that setup. You have everything already so why not spend the $475 on the pistons, and $150 on a 2.5" exhaust made at your local muffler shop?
In the planning stage for an all American TRD Cavalier.
while he's at it he mine as well take the block to the machine shop and have them bore out the cylinders .020" then he could just order some wiseco overbored pistons and eagle rods. that way he doesn't have to get custom made 8.5:1 pistons cuz the overbore lowers the compression ratio on it's ownputtin him at about 10.7:1 i'm doing this same setup, already ordered everything, just waiting on shipment. although i'm doing secret cams, not HO cams.
you goofballs..
yup pay $450 for custom pistons (not to mention grinding work on the water ports and even then its still a hack job) to get 10:1 when you have a whole engine that already has 10:1 compression and is MADE to rev high (no oil BS, high flow head, high flow cams, etc etc). I'm with Scott.
Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..
thank you jrobz .
the HO already revs higher, already makes the compression you want, and has no oil or head flow issues...and no matter how much you over bore the 2.4 cylinder walls the quad4 will still have bigger pistons............point made.......any counter?
My
MILDLY built
LD9 w/ 9.3:1 compression, and a hand full of 2.3 parts, makes about as much power as a stock W41.....
now imagine if my engine had a head that flowed as good as the '086', cams as large as the HO or W41, and the 10:1 compression found on the LG0.......
I would stick with the LD9
(now with that said, my '02 has a LD9, my '96 has a W41, and my '95 is getting a HO)

I know there are tons and tons of posts about the 2.3 Ho intake manifold but I would like someone to clarify something for me. If I get a 2.3 HO manifold and port it to match the heads, will it bolt right on to the 2.4 if not what needs to be done, also what gasket do I use? Last question, can the 2.4 Tb bolt onto the manifold.

My 2.3 manifold bolted right up to the head, i was actually waiting for the flange to be made the day we bolted it up and we just tryed without it. It seemed to have worked, but i now believe that i have a leak. As far as the stock TB, it bolts up, i used mine and it worked just fine, plus u dont have to worry about sensors not working.

I strongly suggest you to read more before building an engine and thinking oversize pistons lower compression. You're in for a suprise.

Nope sorry, i didnt hook my cruise back up. I zip tied it and put it off to the side. I dont need it, my Cav only comes out on weekends. Im pretty sure whats leaking is the surface from intake manifold to the head. Its probably not flush. Im taking it off next weekend and redoing the whole set up. U will really be amazed at how much mid and top end u get from this mod. Best mod i have so far. I suggest going with the secret cams next. I only had that done to my old motor and i ran a 10.1 in the 1/8 mile. Not really good, but it shocked alot of people down here.
