Hi All,
I have an RKsport 4-2-1 header with 2.5inch custom piping, with an injen intake. Iam also running with a gerlic (aftermarket universal high-flow cat - not sure about the spelling) cat and have replaced it in the last 2 months, because the first cat (same kind) was burnt out after about 1 year. The car is beginning to stall while idling or having the tach bounce up and down. I just brought it to a mechanic and he says I have burned through this cat as well. What course of action would you take? I don't get any check engine lights or anything, but I know my performance is suffering as well as the car for running too rich.
Has anyone experienced this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry forgot to mention it is a 98 2.4L
well i don't have a 3rd gen and i don't have a 2.4 but obviously you must be running rich. maybe hook up an air/fuel meter to your car and take it from there
People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......
dont bother get rid of the cat ...i burnt through my magna flow in about 3 months as well..phil

When I read that, it looks as if your Throttle Positioning Sensor is/going to be shot.
I would seriously look into all your emission sensors, including the TPS. I think your sensors are not reading right, hence the running rich.

Mr/ Goodwrench how do you look into something like that? Is there a method besides replacing things like that and hopping it fixes the problem? Just wondering cause mine has some of those symptoms. It sputters occasionally and will die randomly when sitting at a light or rolling to a stop at a light. My registry is up to date.

Seriously, one clear, accurate and sure way of finding if one of the emission pieces is failing is by running GM's Tech-2 and unless you have connection with somebody letting you in borrow it, your only option is the dealership.
There will be OBD-2 scanners, but those only work when a CEL comes on or is recorded.
Now, I am not sure if HP tuners will let you do that as well, as I am not to informed on that program.
There could be many reasons why yours is sputtering at a light, from possibly faulty fuel pump, to clogged injectors, to a clogged air filter, to an emission related sensor.
Good-luck.

Thanks for the input, I am bringing in the car tomorrow to the exhaust shop that put everything in. I hope they can find a solution - I was considering getting the HPTuners suite to ensure that all the air/fuel ratios can be properly set, but I don't really want to spend that much money unless I really have to - since I will probably be keeping the car for another year or so.
