Help!Swapped stock 2.2l motors and theft light on solid!
Tuesday, October 31, 2006 6:39 PM
Hey guys,
well, my best buddy did a swap. A 97 2.2l motor into his wifes 96 2.2l, completely bone stock. He had to change the crank sensor, apparently it was 3 wire on the 96 and 2 wire on the 97. But the left light stays on solid now. I told him to try the passlock learn (as in FAQ), but it hasn't worked so far.

Now, in that write up it says the light will be flashing on the dash. its on solid..what does that mean? Also, he didn't touch anything else and used the stock harness from the 96 motor. I haven't had a chance to get to see it yet (busy with new baby), but would HPT be able to take off the VATS on a 96 2.2l? But its the solid light (suppose to be flashing) that really has me buggered. Not to mention, his wife is chocked

It turns over, but not firing. He can hear the fuel pump prime, and lol..it builds pressure as he soaked himself by undoing the fuel line.

Help Guys!
Nate

he also needs to use the ignition module off the 96. the plugs are the same, but the modules are very different in how they work. I don't know if that will solve the theft light tho.

HPT doesn't work on 96's...

Did he get the wiring correct when he swapped the crank sensor? How did he account for the 3rd wire, leave it hanging?

K. I just talked to him. I told him to swap ignition coils..just in case some how the 97 one wasn't working. mm..how do the work different? Ill get him to do that tho! Thanks.

@!#$..didnt realize it doesn't work on 96 cavies. thought it worked on all ob2 chevys.

hey skirl,
ya tried the passlock relearn..no worky. And thats the weird part, all he swapped was the motors. All the wiring etc was left in place from the 96 and the n97 motor was just dropped in.

the module for the 96 seems to do the ignition timing itself as it has CPS inputs plus an input for a timing modifier from the PCM. 97+ all the calculations were moved into the PCM and all it gets told is essentially : " 36BTDC, now 35.5BTDC, now 36.5BTDC..." you get the picture? Basicly a dummy or lemming module.

mm... my buddy didn't call me back, so im assuming that swapping ignitions didn't work

His wife left me an emai saying he was going into dealershhip to ask about it.

may want to make sure the module under the coils was swapped to the 96, not just the coils..

sometimes the theft doesnt take the 1st couple times , the theft gets wipped out from the battery being disconnected

and the light being on solid , tells me that is the problem

GM Service manual says:
Turn ignition on and try to start the car. Do not turn off ignition. Leave on for approx. 10 minutes until "theft" quits flashing. (Again, do not turn off key.) Start the car. Computer will reset " code " while running.

sometimes it works if you turn the key off sometimes it works they way they tell you

K.

He swapped the 96 ignition module/coils back on and no go. The theft light is still solid. Anybody have a gm manual to look up what that means? My buddy is mechanically inclined (built mustangs in high school) and checked over all the wiring/sensors..but still nothing.

Any other ideas guys??

Thanks guys!

Poundin fire,
you were right. I talked to him again, and told him to install it completely (he didn't hook up plug wires before) and voila worked like a charm.

Thanks for the help guys!! But definitely something to note that he 96 ignition module is different then the 97

Glad to have helped. I know it was frustrating as hell when the the exact same thing happened to me, except i put a 96 engine in a 97.
