Is there any real advantage in switching from a 1995 cavalier 2.2L to a 1996 cavalier 2.2. I know the 1996 is obd2. But performance-wise does this give me more options to work with?
From 95 to 96 i would choose 95. Throw a HO in the 95 and call it a day.
96 just has to weird of a ecm IMO.

i Was told I can repin the 1996 to work with the hptuners. Is this true?
You could switch to a 97 engine bay wiring harness and 97 ecu, and use HP tuners. How hard is it to switch to a 95 from a 96? I am guessing that it is the same deal, you could cut up the 96 harness, but I am sure you could jsut get a 95 or earlier harness and ecu with the chip you wanted and you could run odb1? I doubt anything on the interior changed from 95-96.
Where would i find a harness and ecu for a 97 or 98? Junk yard? Ebay? GM dealer? What other tuning options are avaliable for the 1996?

OBD1 to OBD2 system swap will require harnesses, fuel tank, vapor hoses, PCM, and possibly an engine because some sensors may not install into the earlier engine.
But after that, HP will make basic tuning as easy as it can get. The investment to tune is $500.
Sticking with a 95 system only allows tuning options, but none are very user friendly. All will entail buying multiple components from different sources to get an operating tuning system. The investment will be similar to the cost of HP, but the use of the components will require a higher level of knowledge than the HP system.

What my plan is!
I am going to hopefully pick up a 1996 on the 2nd. I want to put the ecu and harness from a 1997 in it. Wondering have any of you done this before. Maybe i will make a new post when it comes time to do this. Unless one of you have done this allready and can tell me if it works or what.
I was goign to do it back when I was heavy into my build, it has slowed down since I am 1000 miles away, but I had sourced out my harness and ecu, found the cheapes ones I could. There is nothing to it. The dash harness is the same for both years, so basically all it is, is.....Unplug the plug at the firewall, take out the 96 harness and ecu, and reverse order for the 97 stuff, and the 97 engine harness will plug right into the plug at the firewall with no problems. NOW, if the ecu that you got wasnt from your car specifically, say your car is a 2.4 auto, and you got a 2.2 manual ecu from a 97 or 98 year car, you need to look up a 97 2.4 auto's VIN code on the internet somewhere, autotrader.com, anywhere, and use that VIN to flash the ecu to work with your car. Junkyards USUALLY dont keep their ecu;s organized by year/motor/tranny/other options, they just use the part number, but the part number is the same for all 97-98 ecu's.
