Installing lightened LD9 Alternator Pulley
Sunday, August 13, 2006 1:30 PM
Today I changed my battery and, looking under the hood, it didn't look to hard to change the alternator pulley in there, even with the GM blower installed, so I gave it a shot.

I got the stock one off with no issues but the new one doesn't fit. Have to get -MD- LD9 to replace it for me. Looks like I've got one of the freak alternators with the slightly larger shaft.

That's besides the point though. When discussing this in the GP thread, it was mentioned that the people with the blower would need to remove it in order to change the pulley.

I'm just posting this to say that's not the case. I used a 3/8" ratchet with a torx bit that fit the alternator shaft. With that, I used a 24mm combination wrench. I put the combination wrench on the nut and, with a piece of cloth, braced it against the frame toward the front of the car. I then put the torx bit into the shaft and slowly pulled the socket wrench forward to loosen it. It took some force, and I went slowly so I wouldn't go flying when it came free, and it eventually came free. From there, the rest was gravy.

Just an FYI for the rest of the people who may not have done this yet.

I figured this was the way to do it. I was looking it over the other day and was test fitting tools to go ahead and try it.

Nice job WW.

Sadly, I'm not quite up to removing the alt just yet. I'm so busy, but I will get to it eventually, I wonder if I have a freak pulley.

you got lucky , ive had some there was no way to get the nut off unless you used a impact

Yeah, I've got both but didn't have the time to attempt to replace the crank pulley and am pretty sure I need to buy a new wrench since I don't have anything over 24 mm or 1".

I only took a crack at the alternator pulley since I figured I could do it easily. And really... if the new one had fit it would have been an easy as pie installation.

let me know how much lighter it is and if you get any more revs?

What do you mean by "more revs"?

Incidentally, to hold them in your hand they feel about the same... but heck, it's only a 3.3 oz. difference. I expect the crank pulley to make a tangiable difference but won't have that on for at least another month or so.

I bought the alternator pulley just because the price was right and Mike did a great job in setting up the GP. It might not make much of a difference, but it's easy to change and doesn't cost much. There really wasn't any reason NOT to buy it.

i paid way too much for the unorthadox pulley and belt. not much gains barely noticable. so do you need to change the belt for this alternator pulley? or is it just the same size not underdrive? quicker revs is what i meant.

Well,
If you can get in on, one, then no.
Keep whatever belt you're using.
The pulley is factory sized diameter.

Ask MD LD9 if he can get you one.

Yep. Same size, just half the weight.

Honestly, I doubt there's a measurable performance difference with just that. If you're gonna do it, get both the alternator and the crank pulley.
