yes hi everyone im intreasted in buy and cavalier but i need 2 know whats better 4 tuning a 2.2 ecoc or a 2.4 ive heard alot of storys but this sites 4 real plz msg me back and let me know i need 2 know soon before i got out adn buy a z24 soon also whats the parts availibility
^^ I would definitely go wit the 2.2 ECOTEC engine. just because its newer, and will probably have less miles. also, this engine has proven to be a tough engine numerous times, and it is also backed up by GM. the cobalts also come with this engine, so new parts are gonna keep coming out for them. as for the 2.4, its already dead, and i doubt any new parts will be made, even though there are quite a few parts out for it, I just think your better off with an eco. but thats just my opinion. oh and dont confuse the 2.2 ECO engine with the 2.2 OHV.... because if u do end up getting the OHV, your not gonna be a happy camper, trust me on that one.
anyone else have and answer or if the 2.4 is even any good alot of mechanics are telling me it has numorus problems
well ok i own a 2.2 (non eco) and honestly it's REALLY easy to work on everything is right there and straight forward..not a lot of ppl like em b/c there slow but meh honestly i could really care less!....some ppl (MOST) i should say have the 2.4....it's NOT that great of an engine, it EATS oil like a mother, its got a horrible mantiance record, and it's just not worth the problems.... IMHO i would go wit the 2.2 ecotec heard nothing but great things about those engine's but!!! if u are going to e boosting it then plz do up the internals i've seen SO many ppl on this site BLOW there engine's! if i was to buy another J-body it would be the 2.2 ecotec hands down!
I agree with flat black cavy and orlando mon. 2.2 eco huge after market and reliable. 2200/2.2 reliable but slow and easy to work on. 2.4 is the godfather of the cavy it is the power house that could have been a contender if it was backed more and gm had givin it the 2.3 oil pump it would have been reliable. The 2.4 is also the worst to work on.
i dont think the 2.4 is hard to work on. the plugs are on top. easy oil change. only major thing people bitch about is the water pump
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Yeah and the timeing chain tensoners the water pump goes and then the tensoners and that is a BI@# to get in their to fix might as well pull the motor. The ecotecs after market is now bigger than the 2.4's adn it realitively cheaper and yes i have a 2.4 i have thought about it many a night worryin if i go to the track will i through a rod or if i will have to do a water pump any time soon. I have just heard way to many horror stories and alot of Z's do make it to the 140K Mile marker.
well with any motor you can throw a rod. not just 2.4s
and water pumps go bad in all engines. some sooner, some later
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Ease of repair and replace are what i'm talking about and last time i check the 2.2L ohv water pump can be done in 15 minutes and the pump is 21.95 including tax.
Nightmare, you know my car...2.4 with about 180,000 miles on it and i never replaced my water pump. dont worry bout it. and to answer the original question. i own a 2.4 and even i say go eco. I read an article the other day, and a few times before and they can actually handle about 500 hp on a stock block and crank. plus there is more of an aftermarket for them. just look at the drag car motor. its supercharged and turboed with 55 lbs of boost....lots of potential there....
