Heres a link I found to a study done by www.engine-builder.com. This is a publication dedicated to professional engine builders. If your looking to get any machine work done to your 2.2/2200, here's an idea of what to expect to pay. Don't wait too long, they only keep their articles up for a short period of time, so you might want to save the article.
EXCLUSIVE! Rebuilding the GM 2.2L Labor Cost Study
I tried to get into the article but my Adobe isn't opening for some reason. Can someone maybe do a copy/paste and send it to me?
Also look at the 2006 Editotial Articles button in the left colum for past tech articles. Some good stuff for those who build their own motors.
Sweet, saved a couple things in there!

Its beyond me why someone would go to the trouble of writing all that now years after its been discontinued, that might have been useful like 5 years ago. Trying to work with one of those is like pissing in the wind it takes several thousand just to bring it up to ecotec power levels and you can get an eco with tranny for 500 bucks, I just cant see the point in doing major work on a motor like this
1989 Turbo Trans Am #82, 2007 Cobalt SS G85
If you would have taken the time to read the beginning of the article you would have seen why they wrote it.
Anyways, that site is for those with the techical know how to build an engine correctly, especially the professional.
Why do you guys find it neccesary to post uneccesary stuff about the OHV over and over again? It's like still being one of those guys who calls every car with modifications rice, get over it and deal with what YOU have and don't worry about what others have.

spoken like a true moron....
if you knew anything about pre 2000 j's and why the ecotec swap isnt a grand thing.... you might understand
I don't understand why someone has to come into another post and put down their work. If you don't have anything constructive to add, then don't post any thing at all. I don't go into posts about other motors and belittle them, I will add constructive comments, if I say anything at all.
If you have anything negative to say, start your own post!
10 min head swaps. Need I say more?

Wha... on the Eco? Or the person who owns it? Removal is easy. Reatachment is a little trickier.
I'm going to be looking at this site frequently. Thank you, Madjack.

Lol, definately not on the eco...I hate working on DOHC motors (although 4cyl may not be too bad).

too bad its for the U.S. only
its not like I could have saved money, as I'm already done my machine work.
interesting article, none the less.
Lol, did anyone else notice they called it the "GM LS1" at the top of the first table?

That they did, but the pricing is concurrent to what was listed in the other tables.
Ok here goes my post.
Reason 1.
While an eco with a tranny is 500, a pcm can be just as much, not to mention the front end on a pre 2000 j, a swap of some wire harnesses, spedo, tach, that whole 9 yards. And then there's a 3000 supercharger for the eco you have to put on to get power, along with 695 for hp tuners.
And im not even counting for new clutch, rebuilt internals.
And yet for around the price of a supercharger, you can actually rebuild a 2.2 ohv, with less headache. Though i hear most prefer the 2.3, the 2.2 also is a built motor that can take the punishment with a few more mods, rods pistons.
Reason 2.
Because we can!
Reason 3.
Because its funny to watch ricers and v8's crap their pants when they look under the hood at a built ln2, and say "WOW i got beat by a 4 cylinder".
Thats why.
Why not go with an ion redline swap if your going to go through the trouble of doing a ecotec.
Why use Eco pcm???????
OBD1 PCMs are cracked and tunable. Use early Saturn Eco ignition module for correct, ecm friendly 4 wire signal. Ignore cam signal. Hey, lookie, it's "just another engine."
The only reason I'm doing an LN2 is because the peer pressure is too much for me.
That, and because parts keep falling into my lap.

Lol, x2
But, if you're not, I got dibs on the 1.8L guide (if you ever bought it).

Awesome!! SOO going in the FAQ
Aside from the age-old debate on the 2.2L vs. 2.3L vs. 2.4L vs. 2.2L Ecotec vs. everyotherengineoutthere.... I guess if you've already got the parts, it's cheaper to just "run what ya brung"...
I know that's why I stuck with the 2.4L after my 2000 Z24 was torched... I still had loads of parts for the 2.4L... otherwise I would have been in an Ecotec-equipped car by now.

It's even better that it's THAT 4cyl. They expect an Ecotec. Or an LD9. That's the best part. The other part I like is when it's the Camaro guy that's wiping the smile off his face and you tell him you used parts made for HIS ENGINE.

... That you bought on Ebay, for 1/2 what they were worth, after he pulled 'em to install something shinier that he saw in Hot Rod!!

Got that right. You know, my friends give me a lot of sh*t because I still haven't got the VR4 yet, and yeah, I want one, but this LN2 thing is just too intriguing to just give it up. It's kind of fun being the underdog. Plus it's not my only car so if I screw it up no big deal.
lucky you, my sf is my only car, and its been down for 3 weeks so far. still waiting on my EMS to get here. Im 3 weeks behind schedule.
