you can only do how much your budget lets you, or how much you are willing to spend

hey,
as far as performance for the head check out this thread:
roller rockers for 2.2

buy motor mounts, SS valves ( i suggest 1mm oversized) here:

2.2 95-97 car customs page

unless going with a crazy cam your springs should be fine.

get you head port and polished, 3 angle valve job, roller rockers conversion (which i should have a set of 1.6 roller rockers you could buy).

that should net you some gains. depening on whether you have exhaust and/or intake upgrades.

but like said above it totally depends on how much you want to spend.

Hmm, not to be trying to start something but...who did the first headgasket?? And why did it go out a second time?? Maybe the mechanic working on it isnt doing something right? Maybe you should be thinking about what's making your motor blow so many headgaskets...the quality of the work put into your motor etc etc...I've had nitrous and then a turbo on my motor and had two teens own it before i got to it and never had any headgasket issues...but i guess every car is different...

Sean is correct as far as what can be done while the head is off. If you don't already have a K&N filter on your intake, get one. The filters that come with most E-Bay intakes are just el-cheapo's, not worth the material their made with. Do a full 2 1/4" exhaust, header, high flow CAT, and muffler(s)/resonator(s) for the sound you like.

As for the head gasket problem, get the head resurfaced, up to .015", if you stay with the stock rockers, or more (for more comression, up to about .025-.030") if you use the roller rocker conversion. You MUST get new head bolts, this motor uses torque-to-yeild bolts, in which the bolts must streatch a predetermined amount to seal properly. Used bolts are already streatched and won't seal corectly. Use a tap to clean the threads in the block, then use some moly based assebly lube on the threads and underside of the bolt heads, this is for smooth, consistant thread engagement. Run the bolts in finger tight, then torque them in 1/4 turn incraments, in order to 43ft-lbs (short bolts) and 46ft-lbs (long bolts). After you've reached this amount, turn each bolt, in order, another 90 degrees.

Torque sequence:

Intake side
(8)-(4)-(1)-(5)-(9)
(7)-(3)-(2)-(6)-(10)
Exhaust side

Hope this is the info you were looking for.

get a head gasket but nothing else to fix your problem just so you can still drive it around, save up and buy a used cobalt ss s/c or ion redline s/c for real power

see a cobalt is an option, i have a mountain of parts in the garage just itching to be on the car. the headgasket was my fault, i was rushed the last time i put it on, but not again. this time i have another car to drive while this one is laid up. i would like to get more power out of this engine because basically at this point i have nothing less to lose on the car, but the fun of making it faster. and dario i have the car of real power sitting im my driveway already. my MR2.

What do you want for the rockers, we got my 2.2 5angle valve and 1mm oversized.

if you aren't willing to spend much on a 2.2 you might as well forget about modifying it for performance as you have to spend a couple of grand before a 2.2 is somewhat fast... you said it yourself you have your MR2 when you need power...

not dissing the 2.2 but that's what I'd do... use that money for other goodies on the MR2

15.574 @ 89 mph stock without charger. new times with charger coming soon.

What do we need to do to keep your kind out of these posts? lol. I had 9 psi for about $300...add on $500 for HPTuners and $100 for an IC and you've got an easy 14 second car for a 3-figured price...not bad IMO.
