TB-Is bigger better?

I have a 97 Cavalier with a 2.2 engine. I race it at the local circle track. Can I switch to a bigger throttle body? Mine is one big piece that is part of the intake. And should I replace it? If I go bigger, with it hurt or help my torque and/or horsepower? I grabbed a tb from a quad4 out of a Grand Am. But it is just the TB, not part of the intake, like mine is. Do I have to do some cutting and machining? Or is there some GM out there with a bigger TB that will bolt up to my 2.2?

i would just take it to the a machine shop and tell them you want it 56mm and they should be able to make you a new butterfly plate. I believe it is 56 mm anyways. it maybe be 59. anything bigger and you start to lose velocity and it hurts power. other than that it doesn't really increase hp or torque, just throttle response.

the 95-97 2.2 ohv engines don't really have much that swap from any other engine. that is what makes it so much fun to get them built.

You can go up to 56mm on a N/A motor, but if the head isn't ported and you're using the stock exhaust manifold, then it really won't do a whole lot of good.

hmm, when you bore out the TB, it says in the FAQ, you need a bigger plate, im guessing the plate is the thing that turns and lets air in and out....right? not to hard to do if you have the right tools, say a lathe to turn the TB and tools to cut a circle.......

^^ or you could just get a bigger plate off one of the older HO TB's

so whats the advantage of a bigger TB? if theres more air coming in, i need to have an exhaust to take more air out correct? what about more fuel?

nope the 95-97 tb plate was oval instead of round so it wouldnt work...

Bigger is better..with the 6000 SUX!

Not sure on your motor, but with the Ecotec - RSM's 62mm TB is what I am running with. I have heard good things about Reveco though.

I do know you want something called air velocity or something?, To big of a TB will hurt your low end big time!

Hope that helps....if it doesnt..sorry!
