You can take the cluster out, but the pcm requires something in the cluster to actually start and run your vehicle. I tried doing all autometer guages in my cavalier, which is a 95 and for some reason the damm ecu requires that you keep the cluster connected.

I'm well on my way to swapping out to a megasquirt, but I'm also heading up the 95 tuning project, using flash chip hardware and some ingenuity. In the mean time, if your looking for that indiglow look, why not try a set of indiglow guages off ebay, i'm not sure if they make them for your car but it would be worth it for show. I bought some for my show cavalier, and had them custom stamped for show.

The ECU, ignition switch, and gauge cluster are the 3 parts of your car's anti-theft system. The car will start, but die immedietly with the cluster unhooked. Try it if you dont believe.

It could be part of the vats. I wonder why they would put VATS in to the cluster though, not like someone trying to steal a car is gonna rip out a cluster?

If it runs without and you don't pull any codes, probably. But it only makes sense that it shouldn't run without, or at least run right. I heard of a guy hooking up the electronic's of the guage cluster to the body wiring, and hiding it behind dash, but i don't see much room to do so.
