Compression vs Mandrel

hey guys

is there a huge difference in compression bending vs mandrel bending?

the reason i am ask is because nobody in my province has a mandrel bender and it would be a pita to piece the system together by just buying the bends

I know crush bent = the bad but i am not sure about compression bent

Whats up people?

Mandrel bend allow for a more free flowing exhaust but finding a shop that has a mandrel bender is rare. Chances are you will have to order the bends and get it all welded together. Theres always a debate on how much more free flowing a mandrel exhaust is compared to a compression exhaust but in my eyes your not going to see a big difference unless your boosted or running nitrous. Maybe 3-4 horsepower is your just using some bolt ons.

For the time and trouble to get a mandrel bent exhaust, it is not worth it. If you were a full time racer, for a living then yes it would be, but for a daily driver, play toy no. I do not have mandrel bent exhaust, but yet my car has pulled 14.8's all motor.

i went ahead with compression according to the exhaust guy it would be damg near impossible to run a mandrel pipe where the stock pipe goes to give enough room for the suspension to move freely i like mine its a 2.5 with a flowmaster and a 3.5"" tip sounds good no resonator eyt but when i get m header on i'll have to get one. the exhaust guy said their would be an almost 90degree turn in the mandrel bend to fit correctly and becuase of that much of a then you could lose power. if you go 2.5 mandrel my best advice would be to go with the an ebay company 2.5 inch or megan exhuast with a 2.5 inch and just switch the mufflers if you don't like the sounds. companys but more time in finding the best route for the ehaust then your regular exhaust shop i think.

Your exhaust guy is smoking crack... I've seen first hand 4-5 cars with 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with no issues on clearance...

manrell are super cheap on ebay, if you crush bend a 2.5" pipe, you could do 2"mandrell and have the same effect, (or very close too) for the extra couple dollars and the apperance, get the mandrell

HP Tuners | Garrett T3/T04B | 2.5" Charge Pipes | 2.5" Downpipe | 650 Injectors | HO Manifold | Addco front/rear | Motor Mounts | HKS SSQV | Spec stage 3 | AEM UEGO Wideband | Team Green LSD | FMIC | 2.3 cams | 2.3 oil pump swap | 280WHP | Now ECOTECED

on a 90* crush bend with a 2.5" OD pipe, it works out to 2.25" ID.

In all the exhaust systems i have done, i've only done one mandral exhaust, and imo for the time and trouble (and expense) of getting the bends, i find the gains are just not worth it.

i for one will be running a crush bent exhaust as i always have. i would post the dyno difference from a 2.5" crush to a 2.5" mandrel system but it has nothing to do with a jbody and imo wasnt that significant for the cost of the exhaust system.

well crush and compression are two different things crush leaves all those ribs in it compression is smoother.. as for the exhaust guy smoking crack thats what i get for taking it to midas eh? lol i ended up taking it to the place that had my trans am exhaust done and they charged less but they didn't have a mandrel pipe bender thing so i got compressed.

I used mandrel bent, but I just bought the J & U bends and cut and welded them myself. If I didn't do my own, then compression bends would have sufficed.

Your exhaust guy doesn't sound like he knows all that much about exhausts, bud. I've been running this FULL 2.5" system for at least 3 years now, no problems!

To anyone who wants mandrel-bent stainless tubing to make their own exhausts, feel free to contact me or see it all on our website. Even 3" will work, but may have to be crushed over the axle for clearance.
