I guess some J's came with a plastic gas tank versus a metal one (at least, I'm showing plastic gas tanks available in the Mitchell book). Anyone know the weight differences between the two?

Anyways. Plastic gas tanks: #22709902 in 2000-05 (as far as my book goes)
Steel tanks: #22592046 (95-98) 22617055 (99-00) 22704610 (01-05)
Don't know the weight difference, but the fuel line hook ups are different I believe, not a direct swap, but doable.

I KNOW the metal one is about 1.5 times as heavy, but the fuel lines do not run the same.
I was going to swap a plastic one in till I saw where the fuel lines were, and became to lazy.

What about the fuel pump mounting ring and mounting depth? Would it be pssible to mount the older pump assembly in the newer tank without alot of additional work?
BTW, I changed my fuel pump a couple weeks ago, and the steel tank wasn't all that heavy, so I don't think that changing to a plasic tank alone would make a big difference, not worth the price of a new tank, if you could find one. Now, if you can get one from a salvage yard and do some other low buck weight savings, it might help.
If your that worried about weight just take the gas tank out and put a small fuel cell inside the car.
