Remove AC, How to get rid of the compressor? HELP
Tuesday, March 14, 2006 6:42 PM
OK so I got rid of my AC, all of it, now last but not least is the compressor, How do I get rid of it? Can I replace it with a free-spin pully? or is there a different belt?

Any ideas let me know!

You need the eliminator pulley to get rid of it and use the same size belt. If you are extremely lucky, and talented, you can find the correct size belt and skip the pulley. Chris Fontana has an idler pully in the classifieds.

I know my '97 2.2L was available without a/c. I don't know if 2200 same as earlier 2.2L. Check under your hood to see if there is a diagram that shows the pulley arrangement without a/c. Just buy the belt for a 2200 without a/c if so.

on the OHVs you should be able to just use the non-AC belt. Also, you removed everything? or just the big stuff (plumbing, condenser, compressor, heater core)? I'm currently working on removing all the HVAC wiring, fuses, relays, connector pins and it's a PITA chasing all those wires lol.
Also (threadjack), does anyone have pics of the three connectors that are used to connect the main harness to the lighter and dimmer switch on the bezel surround? I can't find them in the factory manual...

Talented I am. lmao
Go to Advance and get a 345K5 belt and no need for a damn pulley.
This SAME belt work for the Ecotecs as well since my came off my LD9 and I am using it on my L61 right now.
Good luck.
There is a crapload of guys(old school guys) that are running this, come on Shifted.

This guy is running an OHV...not a DOHC, so there is no 'AC delete" pulley necessary.

No Im not really getting rid of the wiring too much stock electrical tape without much of an affect.

So I can get a free-spin pully OR I can just get a different belt?

I dont have the OEM hood anymore with the pully Diagram, maybe my haynes has it?

Looking at the engine itself I dont see how you could route a belt to still turn everything?

Ill look into the diagram and the pully...

I dont believe the 2.2 uses a delete pulley.... just a shorter belt.

Yeah, there is no special A/C-less pulley. Look at the diagram on ny-jbodies for belt routing...it looks pretty obvious.
Now, try routing the belt without the power steering pump, there's a challenge

I took my ac off of my 90 3.1 and tried a smaller belt but it didnt have enough tension on the water pump pully and had to keep the compressor on.
Where are the 2ed gen cavys with 3400 swaps?
3.1 16.00
3400 14.74

Okay, im going out on a limb for ya! Starting at the P.S. pulley, ribs down- go around it, flat side of belt goes under spinner pulley in between altenator & P.S. pulley, then ribbed side around altenator, goes back down to water pump with the flat back of belt, down around crank pulley and back up to the tensioner with the back side of belt.
So its around P.S. pulley, under spinner pulley(Back of belt), over alternator and around, down around waterpump pulley(back of belt), down around crank pulley, back up to tensioner(back of belt), and completes routing to P.S. pulley!
I hope that makes since, seeing's that there's no illustations.
And BTW, removing the A/C compressor, you'll need a bracket in between the motor mount brcket and block to take up the space. I uesd castle nuts that were the same thickness as the compressor bracket, since it was the only thing available at the time, no problems!

I don't think there's any 3rd gen that requires an a/c delete pulley..

if you want to eliminate AC, just get the smaller belt. I don't have a/c..all I did was buy a smaller belt

^ GM uses an A/C delete pulley for the 2.4 (I forget the part number), but its only real purpose is to be able to use the same standard belt.

lol, you unschooled fool....... I've done it on 3 cars so far...... The one on the drag car is only a 4 rib belt, but since its only spinning the Alt. I didnt think it needed to be a 5 rib...... plus the store only had a 4 rib the right size in stock....

The tensoiner doesnt care what side of the belt is on it... the smooth side or the ribbed..... you just route the bolt around the crank and alt. with the tensioner in the middle.... when the tensioner is released, it moves down, tightening the belt. JOB DONE.

345K5 is that the belt number that you used? if not do you have the number of the 4rib belt you used by chance?

Ok so tonight I pulled my whole OEM Exaust system (header back) and the Altenator and braket, belt, and the AC compressor and braket, I just used 6 washers to fill the gap between the lower braket and block, dont see where that will cause any problem?

Ill pick up the Shorter belt this weekend if I have time and see if I can get it on there.

Meanwhile Ill paint the Alt bracket!

Oh also got my wiring with the HID's and High Beam sockets done! yay Now STILL waiting on the Bulbs to get here! Oh I also got my valve brakets in the mail today and Mounted my front valves So the Plumbing for the air ride is all done now(minus the tank)

Ok the 345k5 belt is the TOTALLY WRONG BELT!
I got it and it was about 2ft WAY too short!

I exchanged it for a 705k5 belt which is what a 95 Cavalier 2.2OHV without AC uses, and this one its about 8in too long(WTF)

So I may just get the product # from GM and try again

DARNIT!

You don't have a 2.2L, you have a 2200...they use different belts
