My rod bearing(s) are shot. So here are my plans and also some questions
So far off the top of my head i thought of this:
Eagle rods
JE or Weisco pistons 12:1 compression? if possible
Overbored to a 2.5 liter
p&p
5 angle valve job
1mm oversized stainless steel or titanium valves
valvesprings
lifters
bronze valve guides
cometic head gasket
secret cam swap or better?
all new bearings throughout the bottom end (possible?)
mill/plane the head to make flat again
block and head i would like to get an acid bath one disassembled
Are my plans too far fetched?
What would i need as far as ignition and fuel to support all the motor work?
Would i need a different ECU to tune with or would an apexi SAFC II be enough?
Would my stock ecu throw a bunch of codes that i would have to deal with?
Would it maybe better to go with the HO ecu due to the cams and the egr problem or just change to a 99 ECU?
Thanks guys in advance

why not teh 086 head on the 2.4 blcok??? that would put you up there in compression also....and im not sure how far teh factory ecu can take you i would talk to Karo he has a all motor car with nitrious.............
Thanx Charles
Truly all those things list are very possible. I know some might say do a 2.3 oil pump swap, and it is a option. Do you have a price range you are looking to stay in, or is itwhatever you spend?
FU Tuning
will this be a daily driver?? if so, i wouldn't suggest 12:1 c/r
for the ecu you will be fine. If you want to tune it, there HPT that is coming out soon, or you could swap a 95 ecu so you can but the mantaprt chip in it with the 7200 or 7450 rpm limiter. For the head, its up to you, you can do a p&p or do the 086 head swap.
If you plan to rev the engine higher than 6500, then do the 2.3 oil pump swap.
as for the 2.5l, i dont think its safe to overbore that much. What peoples do is stroke the 2.3l engie with a 2.4 crank to get something like 2.6L. but thats alot of works an money.
DEFINETLY get the 086 head if you want some NA power..and you dont NEED the HO cams with it..its your choice...but your low end sounds good...
all i can add is get the 086 head, custom pistons since the head will raise your compression..maybe try to stay around 11:1??? if you want to run pump gas
hell..go get some w41 cams for your new head and swap in a 95 pcm with the chip

all that with what you have planned will make some NICE N/A power
So a revised list would go like this...BTW, this will not be a daily driver
086 Head
p&p
w41 cams
5 angle valve job
1mm oversized stainless steel or titanium valves
valvesprings
lifters
bronze valve guides
cometic head gasket
2.4 Block
Eagle rods
JE or Weisco pistons 11:1 compression
Cryo treated crank
clevitte 77 main and rod bearings
95 Ecu with the redline raising chip
2.3 oil pump swap
new water pump
Is there anything i missed?
Along with a 4-1 header, 2.5 inch full exhaust, ho intake mani, 59mm tb, and intake...what kind of numbers can i look to put down. I know karo ran his 2.4 into the 13s N/A, but i havent been able to get ahold of him.

Here is what I would change if I had a 96 Cav going all motor
So a revised list would go like this...BTW, this will not be a daily driver
086 Head
p&p
w41 cams
5 angle valve job
1mm oversized stainless steel or titanium valves
valvesprings
lifters
bronze valve guides
cometic head gasket
2.3 Block with 2.4 Crank ( 2.6L )
Eagle rods
030 over JE or Weisco pistons 11:1 compression
Cryo treated crank
clevitte 77 main and rod bearings
95 Ecu with the redline raising chip
new oil pump
new water pump

Talk to Karo for your pistons.
you will need custom pistons with valves pocket in them.
this set up is almost like i'll be doing this next month except i have HO cams and 10.5 pistons. turns out that its 8.9:1 c/r that will give me 10.5:1!
just tell karo what you need and he'll hook you up!
Pistons a a little more expense since they are custom.
you dont want to do 1mm oversize valves with 086 head, the valves are big enough, you'll understand when you see it. but you can get stainless steel one. hit Karo.
there is no aftermarket header that will fit the 086 head on a cav!
The Race Shop has one that yield 20whp but its for N-body and wont fit the j-body =(
but i know a guy that is tryng to fit it. i think you will have to cut the firewall to do so.
if not, the 90-92 HO exhaust mani is the one you want. it flow very well from what i have been told. valves spring wont be needed as the one on the 086 head are strong enough.
also if you go with the 95 ecu you will need the MAP sensor from a 95. that is what karo told me. I have done this ecu swap in december for that built and have a check engine light since and the idle is funny, Karo told me i had to use the 95 mao sensor. he is also running on a 95 ecu.
now if you want to so the 2.3 block with 2.4 crank you will have to check quad4forums.com for more info, this is really complicate as you will need 2.4 rod and 2.3 piston or custom 2.4 at the size of 2.3, but these will be very expensive i think. then you have to deal with the crank sensor that is at a different place and figure out something.
chips are available at mantapart for around 250$. with W41 cams the HO chip wont works. get that 7450rmp limiter...
if you have anymore Q, just ask!

the w41 cams will run with a the HO chip..although i dont see why youd want to mix match them like that ..just order the w41 chip..it owns all..7450 redline no speed limiter advance spark,etc...
and as far as the header the once mentioned has a 2.5 " collector so its pretty good for any NA engine BUT the race shop is working on one for the 3rd gen cars.... josh said he just needs someone with a 2.3 or 2.4 equipped Jbody to stop by the shop one weekend for about a day to take proper measurements but for SOME reason i cant get anyone to do it!!!!
i mean a company that developed a 20hp gain header is willing to make one for OUR cars and no one will stop by for fitment??!!!! wtf?
i heard that you can use w41 chip with ho cams but you will have problem to run w41 cams with ho chips.... i dunno tho.
as for the header, I didn't know that trs was working on one for our J, that would be sweet and when it will be available, i'm getting one for sure!!!!
is this info on quad4forums? can you send me link?
thanx!
the info is on www.the-race-shop.com here is the link to the offer..
i dont know why it says pittsburgh though cus the race shop is in weirton WV near the ohio border..and ive talked to josh personally about this on the phone, yesterday actually, he said he just needs some one to bring their car by..shouldnt take more than a day..then this header will be available to all 2.3 AND 2.4 3rd gens!! only differnce is a flange change!
and in case some of you havnt heard of these they OWN ALL OTHER HEADERS! here is the pic of the one for the quad
oh god, this header is beautifull...... thats why i was waiting for scott trend to try it out on a J.
but if they will make it for 3rd gen, thats awesome!
thanx for the link
scott tried it without much luck

firewall was in the way..not to mention steering rack...he was willing to cut away part of the subframe to make it fit but some things ( like the rack) you just cant move

... but TRS's willingness to provide us with our own header is really really good news!
yep.... cant wait to see it done.
exhaust port on 086 head are MUCH bigger than the 2.4l, hence the tubing of the 2.4 header are too small!!! I already tought about that. i have the obx 4-1 header now on my 2.4 and will sell it when i do the new engine.
Quote:
Couldnt i get an aftermarket header for my year 2.4 and just cut the flange to match the 086 head?
im gonna tell ya right now..the stock HO exhaust manifold flows better than the 2.4 header...besides, look at ANY 2.4 header and compare it to the one above..if you can
wuts that a 3" collector. those headers are useless and garbage.
you can overbore to 2.7L. or so it says in i think its in the general section.
Working on obtainting an M-Class license... ?? Hint: 2 wheels.
unless your boosting which he is not^^. but still those headers are garbage. go with some dc sports
Working on obtainting an M-Class license... ?? Hint: 2 wheels.
PLEASE tell me your joking!!! that header DYNOED a 20whp gain on a STOCK HOquad ....so you stick with your dc header
oh..if he goes with the 086 head swap that dc sport header will be useless anyway..mostly because the runners are too small
The 2.4 will not reach 2.5L even with a .040 overbore. Those number you gave came from people that never search and never did calculation.
Dc sport are just like the rest, they copy and sell for more than it's worth. The TRS header IS better than any other header for the J.
Toronto cavalier - you just speak from your ass because you don't even know the 2.3. You think it's like a 2.4. haha, you're obviously a moron. I see all of you buying a header with 1.5" OD tubing. The stock 2.3 manifold has bigger tubing than your "performance header".
