Well my 96 Cavalier Z24 has over 120000 miles on it now. I use straight 30...is that bad? Ive been using sae-30 for over 6 months. Seems to be fine. Idle is a bit smoother. I was talking to one of my mechanics and he said any car over 100000 miles should use thicker oil than recommended (15w-30)..is this true?
Also i live in Florida.. so it gets hots.
From what i have heard, dont use anything your car was not meant to handle, for example my car uses 5w30 i believe, that what it says on the engine oil cap. Look at your oil cap and use what it says, something that will help is if you get your whole system flushed, talk to a guy from mr. lube, thats the first thing that i did when i got my 97 cavalier. Also something you should look into is high performance synthetic oils, they help alot, or high mileage oils, BUT ALWAYS STICK WITH WHAT YOUR ENGINE IS RATED FOR. using anything lower or higher can cause damage later on down the road. such as alot of waer and tear due to friction if the oil isnt thick enough, or if it is too thick, your engine will be sluggish, so just watch out for that. And pls talk to the oil experts at mr lube. Hopefully i got this stuff right, someone elses input might be helpful.

Go back to the
experts at mr lube and tell them they are full of sh*t and for you, I would suggest that you never repeat that crap to anyone.
Now to the original poster, I wouldn't have gone straight to straight 30 but you have been doing it and its fine. Is it burning oil or leaking oil? I would use 10w-30 which is a good bump up from 5w-30. Also again, don't listen to the mr lube guy, if you start to use synthetic oil and have a small leak, it will all come out and if you have a leak and don't know, you will find it. The highmileage oil is also crap, a lot of research has been done to prove that, it eats up seals, making problems worse. Right now, I would continue with straight 30 since you are already using it and if it gets cool enough go to 10w30 for the colder months(anything below 50* or so).
