More than its worth. You would have to turn the engine around the other way, restructure the whole front end, and for what? A couple horsepower and VTEC, which isn't much anyway.

If you want something crazy, put the insane amounts of money you would use on this and build your motor, put a nice turbo on it, and boost it to high hell. Prelude's wouldn't stand a chance, VTEC or not.

well then im going to have to swap a new 2.4 liter engine then. Cuz mine is automatic and i want a standard tranny....and im hearing alot of things about converting a auto engine into a standard is a pain in the ass and needs a lot of tuning......soo you think i should swap a new 2.4 then. And i mean how fast do these engines really get??

Auto engines and manual engines are EXACTLY the same. You just get the manual ECU, put the tranny, flywheel, and clutch on, swap over the other necessary parts, and you're golden. The engines themselves are the same whether they are manual or automatic.

There's nothing that needs to be done to the *engine*, per se, to swap a vehicle from an automatic to a manual. The engine itself will remain fairly intact. The mechanical portion of the swap would entail fabricating a new transmission mount, running the hydraulic lines for the clutch master and slave cylinders, installing the new clutch and brake pedals, installing the shifter, running the shift cables and removing the automatic transmission/axles and reinstalling the manual trans/axles. Note that all this is obscenely general, as I'm sure the exact procedures are posted here somewhere.

Another snafu that might come up is the electronic controls, since the 4T40E is electronically controlled. The only car I've ever swapped over was pre-OBDII, so this wasn't an issue and I can't speak from experience.

so how much do you think that would be..and do you think it would be smart??

yeah its really not that hard to convert over...but my question is why? can you shift faster than a computer can? im not trying to start @!#$ or anything. im just saying, they make shift kits and all sorts of good stuff for the 4 spd auto, so why not just go that route? it would be alot easier and just as fast....

well i find shifting more fun personally. and dont worry im not taking it as i fight..i know alot of ppl like auto but i just have more fun wit standard. thats the main reason you know?

"Not that hard"

It may not be brain surgery level hard, but it's not baking a cake either. You're talking a fairly major undertaking, not a simple Saturday afternoon project where you're back out cruising that night.

As for cost, don't expect to walk into most repair shops and expect a flat estimate. This falls into the realm of custom work, meaning if you can find a professional facility that is willing to take this on, expect something along the lines of "this is the MINIMUM charge, odds are it will go up from here" plus all components.

well....what do you think...is it worth it...some ppl are telling me to just sell mine and buy a standard one..thing is mine is a 99 GT and it only has 50k miles on it

To decide for yourself, start looking into the basic costs. Start sourcing all the basic parts: the transmission itself, axles, shift cables, shifter assembly, pedals and clutch hydraulics (master cylinder, slave cylinder and lines). Once you know how much all that will run you, evaluate if you want to sink that much, plus the install into the car.

Personally, after swapping my Fiero from an auto to manual, I wouldn't do another one. The only reason that mine got swapped is that we combined two non-running cars into one running one. This is coming from someone who works in the automotive industry, has professional facilities and equipment at his disposal and had another vehicle at his disposal, meaning an unlimited timeframe. All that, and I still consider it to be a major PITA.

i think t really depends on you have you thought about a trade for a 5spd, the cost if it is in my opinion is around $1500-$2500 depending on that car and that is if you provide all the parts, so a trade or something might be the best if you can do this your self, then go for it but i dont think that this is something you can do very easily the hardest part is the fabing for the peddles clutch and shifter ect, trading it might be the bes option !!
