I was wondering if anybody can give me list of some strong engine to do to make it fast and reliable without boosting or nitrous. I was thinking a performance engine kit(if so where to buy one at) with headers, ignition, etc........ Looking for some help thanks. I have a 95 2.2L Chevy cavalier. Trying to get close to 170 to 190 if possible.
Nothing other than boost or n20 is going to get you where you want with a 2.2ohv.

Couldn't have said it better myself. You've really been dealt the short end of the stick, so to speak, with your engine. Its probably the weakest motor in the entire J-body lineup. You won't go far with this engine unless you boost with some engine work done.
Blown.
He stated that he didn't want boost or juice. I'd say if you want a strong engine without boost, I would go for an engine swap. Or just build up your engine. Work on your heads, valvetrain, basically all your engine internals and then go with the bolt-ons.
If you want, I can PM you sites with products that I think your looking for.

I agree with what he says...I highly doubt you will push 170 HP from just motor work, especially on an OHV motor. You'd probably have to run a high compression to do so.
Believe it or not, building an all motor "high performance" engine is more expensive and harder to do than a turbo motor.
Also, your motor has side-mount injectors...now if you plan on upping the compression, you will more than likely need more fuel. The problem with side-mount injectors is that there is no aftermarket upgrades for them nor is there another car you can take the injectors off of to put in.

He does have a 95 so it should still be obd correct? If so,.. I would just suggest a cam port the head and up the compresison a bit and chip it. You wont need stronger rods if you have no intention of boost or spray. and you might be able to get 170 flywheel hp. Granted your fuel setup is preatty mush limited if you search there are guys who have done top feed conversions. And there are also a bunch of guys here who like their ohv cavi's.
Just remember if yo do swap the cost for the motor, harness, computer and other misc. sturff you would need to get to 170hp that you want might cost more than building your 2.2 ohv. Another idea if you want to swap is to find a W41 quad that would give you the hp you want lol......but i could go on and on if you look around and do some searching you will get what you are looking for.

I understand what he was asking, but my asnwer basically told him that he was not going to get a fast OHV without boost. He may get a car that's a bit quicker by building the engine but he won't have a fast car by any means.
Furthermore, he's a newbie, so I assumed that he was looking for 'quick fixes' he could do to make a fast car just like any other new member that joins the site. With that in mind, I doubt that someone like that would be willing to sink alot of money into that much engine and drivetrain work to have a car that's faster than stock but still not very fast.

I ment to say obd 1...........
ive been wondering something maybe you guys could guestimate for me. i want 10.5to1 comp pistons, port and polish head, jbp stage 2 cam, and stand alone with a tune on motor. what kinda power range am i looking at and would their be anything else i would have to do fuel wise. after that build i might run a 100 shot of nitrous

2.3 cam, guy has a 2.2 ohv there bud

werd. if you want to cam an OHV... ah just make sure you replace the rest of the valvetrain, especially if it isn't a zero mileage motor

Stevin, I also have an LN2, and frankly, I love it. It's not ever going to be the fastest car, but you have to look at reality. I wanted the high hp monster LN2, but without turbo or supercharger, it's not likely. There's a lot of things to ask yourself before you even turn a wrench on your motor. Is this your daily driver? Do you race every weekend? What kind of racing do you do? What kind of power do you actually need? Low end torque? High RPM horsepower? If you drag race, and you're in a Cavalier, you probably bracket race, because heads up is never going to be a Cavalier's best area, unless it's handicapped OR you dump a ton of money into it. Do you autocross? What class? Do the mods meet class regs? Once you know what you need or want, then start modifying. Most of all, you need to ask yourself how much you want to spend. There are plenty of people who will tell you not to waste your time on this engine, but that's a decision only you can make. There are plenty of parts out there if you know where to look. If you have any questions, let me know I'll gladly lend a hand.
