clear the code each time it sets

use a 99 pcm if you have a 97-98

try the egr simulator

yep, thats what happens. With no EGR your cars fan will do that. Does it on mine too.

As '97cavie said, use a '99 ECU. You'll have to switch to the '99+ knock and run the wires to the correct pinouts on the new ECU.

How much is an ECU? Sounds like a PITA.

Why not just run a fan switch via a temp sensor? Then you tell it when to come on and go off.

You just need to make the EGR fit with the manifold. The 99 ecu swap will be alot of work. The EGR sim doesnt work. So i think the best bet is to get the EGR to fit with the manifold in place.

Have you done the swap? Don't talk like you know something, if you haven't done it. This site is full of people more willing to talk then try.

No i have not done the swap, please tell me what is all involved.

But since you didnt seem to understand what i was saying, all i was saying is that just fitting the EGR to the car with the HO manifold swap would probably be the easiest thing. And this is something i HAVE done. http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=2&i=341452&t=338769#341452

Don't speculate, it just spreads information which may be wrong; especially for a newb like the original author.

The '99 ECU swap involves running two wires from a new knock sensor to unused pins on the ECU wiring harness. Took me 15 minutes maximum. You can have both the stock (1 wire) and '99 (2 wire) sensors hooked up until the ECU is reflashed since the pins are used.

whats EGR?

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation, wich basicaly means, some of the engines exhaust is sent to the intake manifold to help keep cylinder temps down, thus improving emissions
